Hampden-Sydney Taken Down By No. 2 Christopher Newport 14-6

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior Nick Thompson (Midlothian) scored two goals with one assist and junior Michael Leone (Vienna) scored two goals, but Hampden-Sydney College could not respond to a strong second-half from nationally ranked No. 2 Christopher Newport University falling 14-6, Saturday night at Jennings Family Stadium.

H-SC opened the game with a goal 7 minutes and 46 into the first quarter, as junior Thomas Harry (Troy) got his first goal of the year on a solo effort. After a two-goal run from the Captains, the Tigers answered, tying the game on a Leone goal off the assist from Thompson. Thompson then gave H-SC the lead back with a goal of his own and was followed up 41 seconds later by Leone off an assist from sophomore Campion White (Apex, NC) to cap off a three-goal run to end the quarter with a 4-2 lead in favor of H-SC.

The second quarter was a low-scoring affair, with the Captains getting on the board first before junior Ford Burke (Richmond) made it one goal each way after he finished the pass from fellow classmate Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA). Those ended up being the only two goals of the second quarter, as the final 8:13 did not see a goal, as the Tigers took a 5-3 lead into halftime.

The Captains started the third quickly, scoring just five seconds after the opening whistle. Christopher Newport took control, after trailing at the half, they grabbed the lead with 11:37 left in the third quarter and rattled off a seven-goal run as the Tigers trailed 10-5 after three quarters.

Christopher Newport opened the fourth quarter with two more goals before Thompson got his second of the game off the pass from sophomore Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA). The Captains closed the game with two more goals as H-SC was defeated 14-6.

The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, March 29 when they take on nationally ranked No. 6 Washington and Lee University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
