Hampden-Sydney Opens ODAC Play With 17-9 Victory Over Randolph-Macon

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Michael Leone (Vienna) led the game with five goals to help power Hampden-Sydney College to a, 17-9, Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opening victory over Randolph-Macon College, Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Juniors Ford Burke (Richmond) and Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) each scored three goals, with Burke adding three assists and O'Brien adding one assist. Sophomore Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) scored two goals, while senior Nick Thompson (Midlothian) tallied two assists. Fifth-year goalie Will Perry (Roanoke) got his fifth win of the season in net, making nine saves.

The Tigers got off to a flying start, striking twice in the first two and a half minutes, getting two goals from O'Brien, the first off the pass from Burke, and the second he beat the defense for the goal. Burke made it three in a row for H-SC as he capped off the Thompson pass with a goal. Senior Jack Fechter (Potomac, MD) got his first goal of the season on his first shot of the season, which beat the goalie on the break. H-SC scored two more in the span of two minutes, the first coming off the Thompson-to-Burke connection, followed by freshman Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) finishing the feed from Burke to cap off a six-goal run to start the game. The teams trade the next few goals, with Randolph-Macon getting on the board just over three minutes before senior Jack Limon (Gainesville, FL) got the feed from sophomore Gaines Weis (Richmond) in transition and Limon put the ball in the back of the net. The Yellow Jackets scored one more time before the end of the quarter to make it 7-2 in favor of H-SC after 15 minutes played.

Burke started a two-goal run to start the second quarter before Kilfeather got his first of the game just over three minutes into the quarter to push the lead to seven. Macon answered before Leone went on a two-goal run of his own, first scoring off the pass from Burke and second on a solo effort in the span of two minutes. Randolph-Macon answered with two goals of their own, with the final goal hitting the back of the net just before the buzzer sounded to cut the H-SC lead to 11-5 after two-quarters of action.

The Tigers opened the third quarter with two goals in less than a minute of game action, with O'Brien netting his hat trick at 13:47, and Leone getting his hat trick 41 seconds later off the pass from O'Brien. The Yellow Jackets got one back, before Kilfeather found the back of the net once again, finishing off the assist from Weis. The Tigers added another on the finish from Marshall to get his name in the goal column and push the lead to nine after 45 minutes.

Randolph-Macon started the fourth quarter quick, getting a goal after just 24 seconds, and added a second at the 11:37 mark to cut the lead back down to seven. Leone answered, scoring two of the game's last three goals, and both goals that the Tigers scored in the fourth quarter to get the lead to eight and keep it there and take a 17-9 victory over Randolph-Macon.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, March 25 when they travel to nationally-ranked no. 3 Christopher Newport University. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Jennings Family Stadium in Newport News, VA.
