HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA -- Junior
Michael Leone (Vienna) scored two goals and tallied two assists, while junior
Ford Burke (Richmond) scored two goals for Hampden-Sydney College in a 13-8 loss to nationally ranked no.17 Denison University, Sunday afternoon at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
H-SC opened the first quarter with two quick goals, with Leone opening the scoring just over a minute in, as junior
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) provided the assist. Burke got his first of the afternoon three minutes later, finishing the Leone feed. Following a goal by the Big Red, sophomore
Campion White (Apex, NC) answered with a long-distance effort through traffic. Denison tacked on one more goal before the end of the quarter, to make it 3-2 in favor of the Tigers after 15 minutes.
The Garnet and Grey kept it rolling in the second quarter, opening on a two-goal run with Burke providing the first off a Leone feed and O'Brien netting the second while the Tigers were down a man with sophomore
Gaines Weis (Richmond) helping out with the assist. Denison closed out the second quarter on a two-goal run themselves, getting both within a minute to cut the Tiger lead to 5-4 at the half.
The Big Red took their first lead of the contest in the third quarter with another two-goal spurt, before junior
Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) evened the game at six with a man-up goal off a pass from senior
Nick Thompson (Midlothian). Each team traded goals to get to seven all, with Thompson finding the back of the net for goal seven. Denison ended the third like they did the second with a quick two-goal run in less than 30 seconds to take a 9-7 lead into the final 15 minutes.
Leone scored just over a minute into the fourth quarter finishing the fast break opportunity off the pass from senior
Thomas Harry (Troy) to cut the lead to one. That would be as close as the Tigers got, as Denison ended the game on a four-goal run to take the victory 13-8.
The Tigers will be back in action when they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on Greensboro College on Saturday, March 4. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Pride Field.
