H-SC Rugby 7's defeat Radford and JMU at Spider 7's in Richmond

Tigers fall to nationally-ranked Christendom and Georgetown to go 2-2 on the day

Richmond Va The Hampden-Sydney Rugby Football Club traveled to Richmond on Saturday for the second weekend of the three-week Spider 7's tournament series, finishing 2-2 on the day in the 7's format. The Tigers opened with wins over Radford and JMU before falling to nationally-ranked Christendom and Georgetown. In game one, the ruggers defeated the Highlanders from Radford 17-5. The Tigers led 17-0 at half. Bryson Smith opened the scoring with a try, followed by a try by Graeme Ebert. The conversion was good, giving the Tigers a 12-0 lead. Smith scored again, giving the Tigers a 17-0 lead at the half. H-SC made the lead stand up in the second half, only surrendering one try to finish with a 17-5 win.In game two, the Tigers increased their scoring with a 29-5 win over the Dukes. JMU took an early 5-0 lead before tries by Carson Mann and James Gilbert. With a successful conversion after the Gilbert try, the halftime score stood at 12-5. The Tigers' second half offense dominated with second tries by Graeme Ebert and James Gilbert and one successful conversion brought the score to 24-5. The final 29-5 score was set by a try by Alex Barth. In game three, the Tigers faced Christendom. A first-half score by Bruton Peacock set the halftime score at 12-5 in favor of the Crusaders. In the second half, Joe Newcomer's try was sandwiched between two Christendom scores. The conversion was good for H-SC, leaving the final score at 33-10 in favor of the Crusaders. In the final match of the day, the Tigers fell to Georgetown 47-0. The Hoyas entered the day, along with Christendom, with a top-10 national ranking.

This Saturday, the Tigers return to Richmond to conclude the Spider 7's tournament series with strong competition against some of the nation's best rugby clubs. Competitors for this Saturday include, along with H-SC, Christendom, Loyola, Susquehanna, Duke, VMI, and Richmond. The tournament commences with three matches for each team in pool play. The Tigers open with Susquehanna at 9:40 am on Saturday, and then are matched with Catholic at 11:20. H-SC then completes pool play vs VMI at 1:40 pm. Following that, pool play results are used to seed a single-elimination tournament to determine a champion.
