Rugby travels to Richmond for first weekend of Spider 7's

H-SC Developmental Squad finishes 1-2 on the day.

Richmond, VA The H-SC Rugby's developmental squad traveled to Richmond on Saturday to play in the opening weekend of the Spider 7's tournaments. In first round play the Tigers fell to Richmond 19-7. The host Spiders began the match with a quick try and a failed kick. Richmond scored again just before half in the short 7's format and made the kick, making the halftime score 12-0. In the second half a strong drive by the Tigers resulted in a score by Alex Barth. A made kick brought the score to 12-7. With the ball in the Tigers' possession near the Richmond goal line, H-SC knocked on the ball. Richmond ran it all the way back and made the kick, setting the final score of 19-7.

In round two the Tigers faced Old Dominion. ODU opened the scoring with a try and completed kick, followed by a break away try by Graeme Ebert for H-SC. The kick failed to make the half time score 7-5 in favor of ODU. Old Dominion scored the first two tries of the second half and led 17-7 before H-SC came back with a try and a drive that came up just short to make the final score 17-12 for ODU.

In the final round of play the Tigers played Longwood University. The Lancers opened play with a long try and took an early 5-0 lead after a failed kick. At that point the H-SC ruggers countered with four consecutive first-half tries to make the score at half 24-5 in favor of the Tigers. The scoring order in the first half for H-SC: Brandon Broussard (kick failed), Jordan Payton (kick good), Alex  Barth (kick failed), and Jordan Payton (kick good). The Tigers opened the second half scoring with Jordan Payton completing a hat trick with his third try of the game (kick failed). The scoring then continued with tries by Bruton Peacock, Connor Hoban, Thomas Nichols, and Brendan Bagwell. The kicks were good for the first three tries of the second half, making the final score 50-5

The ruggers return to Richmond this weekend for the second of three consecutive Saturdays of Spider 7's tournament play. This Saturday's tournament features eight schools. Pool A contains Georgetown, University of Richmond, VCU, and ODU. Pool B includes Chistendom, H-SC, Radford, and JMU. The Tigers will open pool play against Radford at 10:00 am, followed by a match with JMU at 11:20. Georgetown is currently ranked 8th and 2022 small college national champion Christendom is ranked 17th in the nation for small colleges. Pool play will conclude for H-SC with a match vs nationally-ranked Christendom at 1:00 pm. Pool play results will determine the afternoon championship brackets.
