No. 6 Hampden-Sydney Welcomes Salisbury (MD) For Saturday Afternoon Matinee At 2 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 6 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, welcomes non-conference opponent Salisbury (MD) University on Saturday afternoon, December 30, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. The nationally-ranked Tigers are 9-1 overall, including 2-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), following an 85-67 non-conference road win at No. 1 John Carroll University on Dec. 19 in University Heights, Ohio. The Sea Gulls, 8-4 overall, are scheduled to play at ODAC opponent Bridgewater College on Friday, Dec. 29, at 2:30 p.m. It's free admission for all regular season home contests at Hampden-Sydney and the game will be available to watch on the Tiger Sports Network, pregame airing at 1:30 p.m. in the calendar-year finale.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 61-36 overall at the College, including 33-22 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 6 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC is extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 5.9 points per game, while 10 Tigers are playing at least eight-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.5 points (17 3FGs) and 7.8 rebounds, senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 12.3 points (19 3FGs) and 4.9 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 11.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.0 steals. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (8.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 14 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (5.9 points, 3.6 rebounds). Senior guard DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) (5.4 points, 10 3FGs), fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.1 points), junior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (4.0 points, 10 3FGs), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (3.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 10 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (3.5 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 47% (276-591) from the field, including 41% (91-221) on three-point field goals (9.1 per game), and 77% (107-139) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 75.0 points, and allowed only 60.0 points, for a +15.0 scoring margin.

Scouting Salisbury
The Sea Gulls are coached by fifth-year head coach Maurice "Mo" Williams, a former assistant coach at nearby Longwood University during 2018-19. SU has been led by senior forward Jordan Oates (14.8 points, 13.4 rebounds, 18 3FGs) and junior forward Reed Rebstock (11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 20 3FGs). The Sea Gulls shoot 46% (313-688) from the field, including 35% (77-223) on three-pointers (6.4 per game), and 66% (165-252) at the line; scoring 72.3 points, and yielding 67.8 points, for a +4.5 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC and SU are playing for just the third time, and the series is tied at 1-1. The Tigers took a 77-64 road win last season on January 21, 2023 in Maryland, behind game-highs of 30 points and 14 rebounds by Davidson Hubbard. Of significance in that game, as well, is that Ryan Clements reached 1,000 career points with his 18-point effort that day. The Sea Gulls own a 68-62 home win in the championship game of their own Optimist Classic tournament back on Dec. 6, 2009 in Maryland.

H-SC was ranked No. 6 nationally in the week three D3hoops.com Top 25, released on Dec. 11. The Tigers earned 486 points in the poll. John Carroll (OH) (7-0) was ranked No. 1 with 582 points and 13 first-place votes, followed by Calvin (MI) (7-0, 581) at No. 2, fellow ODAC member Guilford (9-0, 570) at No. 3, Oswego State (NY) (7-0, 544) at No. 4 and Tufts (MA) (10-0, 493) at No. 5. The next poll release is scheduled for Jan. 2-3, 2024.

Tigers Take Down No. 1 JCU
H-SC took an 85-67 road win at No. 1 John Carroll on Dec. 19 in University Heights, Ohio. The Tigers led 34-31 at halftime, and took advantage of a 33-12 run to close the first half (16-4) and open the second half (17-8) in the Top 10 contest. Davidson Hubbard led H-SC with a career-high and game-high 31 points, adding a game-high nine rebounds, along with three assists and two steals. Adam Brazil finished with 21 points for the Tigers, adding four assists. Ryan Clements contributed 11 points, adding a game-high five assists. Alex Elliott had seven points, five rebounds and a game-high three steals. It was the Tigers' second win this season, and third in two seasons, against D3's top-ranked team(s). (see below)

Tigers Take Down No. 1 CNU
H-SC opened the 2023-24 campaign with a 74-53 home win past defending NCAA Division III National Champion and preseason No. 1 Christopher Newport on Nov. 8 in Fleet Gym. The Tigers led 31-22 at halftime, and by as many as 24 points in the second half, in arguably one of the biggest wins in program history, while believed to be the first Top 10 match-up at home, as well. Davidson Hubbard led H-SC with game-highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Adam Brazil finished with 15 points and a game-high six assists, adding six rebounds. Alex Elliott contributed nine points and eight rebounds, adding three assists. It marked the second consecutive season that H-SC has defeated the top-ranked Captains, including an 85-70 road win at CNU on Dec. 13, 2022 in Newport News, stopping a 22-game home winning streak by the Captains.

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 22nd in career scoring with 1,215 career points in 97 career games (12.5). Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements is ninth in career steals with 164 (1.7). Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Davidson Hubbard is tied for 10th in career blocks with 46 career blocks in 68 career games (0.7). Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.
 
Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.
