The Tigers are 1-0 overall following their season-opening 74-53 victory past defending NCAA Division III National Champion and preseason No. 1 Christopher Newport University this past Wednesday night, while the Pride are playing their first game of the season. It's free admission for all regular season home contests and the game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 53-35 overall at the College, including 31-21 in ODAC games. Series History
H-SC leads the all-time series against GC
4-1; however, the Pride did defeat the Tigers a year ago in the season-opening game in North Carolina by a score of
82-77. The two teams first met on January 8, 2003, an 81-63 home win for H-SC, and the Tigers won the most recent contest between the two schools played here in Fleet Gym by a score of
86-72 on Nov. 5, 2021.

Scouting the Eighth-Ranked Tigers
Senior
Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) posted a double-double with game-highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while classmate and team captain
Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) had 15 points and a game-high six assists, to lead the Tigers past CNU. Senior
Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) added nine points and eight rebounds as H-SC led 31-22 at halftime, and by as many as 24 points in the second half, in arguably one of the biggest wins in program history, while believed to be the first Top 10 matchup at home, as well. It was the 18th double-double of Hubbard's career, while Brazil also had a game-high six assists and Elliott contributed three assists. Fifth-year
Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA), along with senior team captain
Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) and classmate
DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) each had seven points, with Clements adding a game-high three steals and Hardy adding six rebounds. The Tigers shot 46% (27-59) from the field, including 43% (9-21) on three-pointers, and 61% (11-18) at the free throw line. Hardy and Wright each scored 13 points in the road setback at GC last season, with Hardy adding a career-high 11 rebounds for a double-double, and Hubbard also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds—Clements and Brazil contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Scouting the Pride
The Pride are coached by first-year head coach Jim Boone, who is in his 38th year overall as a head coach—previously at Division I and II. GC finished last season at 10-15 overall, 5-9 in the USA South Athletic Conference. The Pride return 12 team members, including three starters, and were picked to finish fifth in the USA South this year. GC is expected to be led by senior Matthew Brown, who averaged 12.8 points and 7.6 rebounds, classmate Tim Boulware (12.5 points, 4.8 rebounds), along with junior Isaiah Pruett (11.2 points, 42 3FGs). Pruett scored a game-high 26 points in the Pride's home win last season, while Boulware added 19 points, including five three-pointers.
ODAC Preseason Poll
H-SC was picked first in the
2023-24 ODAC Preseason Poll. It's the first time that the Tigers have been voted preseason number one in the ODAC since prior to the 2003-04 season. The Garnet & Grey earned 140 points, including eight first-place votes among the 13 conference schools. H-SC is followed closely in the preseason poll by four-time defending ODAC Tournament Champion Randolph-Macon College in second place with 135 points, including the other five first-place votes. Guilford (NC) College was picked third with 122 points, followed by Virginia Wesleyan University (104), Washington and Lee University (102), Roanoke College (96), Bridgewater College (65), Shenandoah University (63), Averett University (51), Ferrum College (48), the University of Lynchburg (45), Eastern Mennonite University (23) and Randolph College (20).

H-SC will play a difficult schedule this season, one that includes four schools ranked among the
D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25, including top-ranked Christopher Newport, No. 3 John Carroll (OH) University, No. 11 Swarthmore (PA) College and No. 14 Randolph-Macon, along with three schools receiving votes in the poll—Guilford, the University of Mary Washington and Widener (PA) University. CNU, R-MC, JCU, Swarthmore, UMW and Widener each advanced to the postseason NCAA Tournament. In addition, Guilford and William Peace (NC) University, along with possible opponents the College of Wooster (OH) and Rose-Hulman (IN) Institute of Technology, each fell in their respective conference tournament championship contests a year ago.

Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.

Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.

Up Next
H-SC will go on the road for the first time this season to participate in the Al Van Wie/Rotary Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the College of Wooster on Nov. 17-18 in Wooster, Ohio. The Tigers will play Widener (PA) on Friday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. and either host Wooster or Rose-Hulman (IN) on Saturday, Nov. 18, at either 2:15 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. Widener participated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season, while Wooster and Rose-Hulman each fell in their respective conference championship contests.
