Hampden-Sydney Va The Hampden-Sydney Rugby Football Club defeated Cardinal Collegiate East Division foe William and Mary 33-27 on Saturday to solidify their first place position in the CCRC East. As part of a winning day for H-SC athletics during Friends and Family Weekend, the Tigers defeated the Tribe with a big second-half comeback. The game opened with two first-half tries for W&M by Izak Johnson and Kurt Klesch to stake the Tribe to a 10-0 lead.
Max Pietrykowski responded with a try for the Tigers and the kick failed, making the halftime score 10-5.
At the start of the second half, W&M
built its lead to 17-5 with a try by Liam Painter and kick by Rolf Hsu.
Max Pietrykowski responded again with another try, this one being a penalty try on a tackle as Max neared the scoring line, to bring the score to 17-12. W&M built it's lead once again, with another try and kick by Painter and Hsu and the score now stood at 24-12. This time,
Bruton Peacock responded for the Tigers with a try. The kick by
Graeme Ebert was good, closing the deficit for H-SC to 24-19. W&M's Hsu then successfully completed a three-point penalty kick to once again extend the lead for the Tribe to more than one score at 27-19. As the second half time started to slip away, the Tigers once again clawed their way back in to the game, this time with a try by Aidan Dore. The kick by
Graeme Ebert was good, bringing the Tigers within one at 27-26. With about three minutes in a match that was intense from start to finish,
Graeme Ebert completed the comeback for the Tigers with a try and a successful kick to make the final score 33-27.
The Ruggers will have a bye next week and will next play in a pair of friendlies on Homecoming Saturday on October 21st, vs the Norfolk Blues Rugby Football Club at 11:00 am and vs Virginia Commonwealth at 3:00 pm.
