10/29/2023 2:42:00 PM

Richmond, VA  Although the H-SC - Virginia Commonwealth scoreboard showed over 100 points in a big 66-38 win for the Tigers, the final record will reflect a 28-0 win. Finding themselves in a similar situation to George Mason a week ago as a developing program against the nationally-ranked Tigers, VCU elected to forfeit the official match and play a friendly in its place as both teams prepare for the Cardinal Collegiate Rugby Conference (CCRC) tournament next week in Culpepper, Va. Unlike last week, the HSC RFC elected to play more of its A-side in the tournament prep, resulting in an impressive 66 points for the Ruggers. VCU opened the match with a score and kick to take an early 7-0 lead. Answering for the Tigers, a John Clayton Topping score and Thomas Nichols kick equaled the score at 7-7. A VCU kick gave the host Rams a short-lived 10 -7 lead as a Theodore Cicala try and Thomas Nichols kick gave the Tigers their first lead at 14-10. The lead was then bolstered to 21-10 by a Max Pietrykowski score and Thomas Nichols kick before VCU answered with a try and kick, narrowing the Tigers' lead to 21-17. A Teddy Hendrickson score and Thomas Nichols kick once again extended the lead, this time to 28-17, and a VCU score and kick once again closed the gap to 28-24. The Tigers briefly gave up the lead on a VCU score and kick made the score 31-28 before Jordan Payton scored three consecutive tries and along with two Thomas Nichols kicks, put the lead out of reach for the Rams at 47-31. Alex Barth and Jonathan Person then added insurance for the lead, with their tries and Aiden Dore kicks extending the lead for the Tigers to 61-31. VCU was able to produce one more score and kick to make the score 61-38 before Bryson Smith scored the final try of the day for the Tigers, setting the final score at 66-38.

Finishing the Fall 15's regular-season league play with a 6-0 record, Hampden-Sydney now awaits the seeding results from this weekend's play to set the bracket for next weekend's CCRC tournament in Culpepper, VA, and times and opponents will be released at that time.
