Rugby To Travel To Virginia Commonwealth

Tigers will face the Rams on Saturday in CCRC tournament prep in final regular-season match

10/26/2023 11:37:00 AM

Henrico, VA  The HSC RFC heads to Henrico on Saturday to take on Virginia Commonwealth in the final regular-season game for both teams. Similar to the NCAA, collegiate rugby in the United States is divided into levels: Division I, Division I-AA, Division II, and (in place of the NCAA's Division III) Small College. While still a developing program, VCU competes at the Division II level while H-SC competes in the Small College division. According to our records, this will be the first match between VCU and H-SC.

Even though H-SC and VCU compete in different levels nationally, both will participate in the Cardinal Collegiate Rugby Conference tournament on November 4th and 5th in Culpepper, VA and this match will be in preparation for that. While Hampden-Sydney's seed, opponent, and place in the bracket for the CCRC tournament are still undecided with several matches this weekend yet to be played, VCU's first round looks to be set for a match vs VMI.

The Tigers enter the weekend ranked 20th in the National Coaches' Poll for Small College Rugby, the third CCRC team to enter the poll this season, with VMI at #7 and Christendom at #8. the current coaches' poll can be found here. In a September exhibition match, the Ruggers played current Small-College #4 Catholic University, falling 26-19 in the Blue-Gray Classic in Washington, DC.

Due to a recently-discovered scheduling conflict at Dorey Park, there has been a late change in location for the Saturday 1:00 pm match and it will now be played at Douglas S. Freeman High School in Henrico.
