HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman
Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) scored for the second straight game as Hampden-Sydney College drew 1-1 with Randolph College on Senior Night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action, Saturday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
"Once again we failed to get a win tonight, and based on our performance tonight I thought we deserved one" said head coach
Tommy DiNuzzo. "These are the harsh realities of ODAC men's soccer and now all we can do is go and beat EMU on Tuesday and hope things break out way in the standings. We're proud of the effort the guys put in tonight though and wish we could have sent our seniors off with a win."
It took just over 21 minutes before H-SC grabbed the lead, as sophomore
Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) saw a large opening in the defense to play a ball to Wumpini who beat the goalie with a left-footed finish into the back of the net.
The WildCats answered back in the second half, tying up the game in the 63rd minute. The Tigers had two more great chances, the first from freshman
Jaques Lavielle (Cary, NC) that bounced off the crossbar, and the second from Wumpini who fired it off the bottom of the crossbar and somehow did not bounce in.
Sophomore
Garrett Hodges (Virginia Beach) made two saves in the draw. Freshman
Caden Smith (Faulkner, MD) made his first career start for the Tigers in defense and helped set up multiple scoring chances during the game.
H-SC outshot Randolph 14 to nine and had the edge in shots on target six to three.
The Tigers will play their final regular season game on the road against Eastern Mennonite University in what will be a game with ODAC postseason implications. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the EMU Turf Field.
