HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Sophomore
Jaques Lavielle (Cary, NC) scored two goals to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 4-1 win in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and regular-season finale against Eastern Mennonite University, Tuesday night at the EMU Turf Field.
"Great performance by the entire team," said head coach
Tommy DiNuzzo. "We put together a full 90 minutes tonight and absolutely deserved to win that game. When we play like that, we can be a very good team. Proud of the guys and hopefully the results go our way tomorrow."
Lavielle opened the scoring in the 15th minute, as senior
John Alexander (Wake Forest, NC) found him with the pass and he fought off a challenge from a Royals defender to beat the keeper. Sophomore
Charlie Letson (Wilmington, NC) doubled the lead for H-SC, as sophomore
Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) sent in a cross that was headed to the edge of the box by EMU, but then headed down and past the foot of a Royals defender by sophomore
Drew Miller (Lakewood Ranch, FL) for the tap in goal for Letson.
It was the Royals who struck first in the second half, as H-SC alumni
Josiah King '23 scored against his alma mater to cut the lead to one. The Tigers responded quickly to the goal by EMU, as 53 seconds later, Lavielle cut through the defense and put a shot on target that was knocked in by a sliding defender for the goal. H-SC was not finished scoring, as Boerner whipped in a cross from the left side, and senior
Emory Davis (Palmyra) rose over the defense to head the ball into the bottom left corner and cap off a dominant win for H-SC.
Junior
Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) returned to the lineup, making three saves in the winning effort.
H-SC outshot EMU 21-6 and had the advantage in shots on target, eight to four.
The Tigers now await the results of tomorrow's ODAC slate of games to find out if they will make the ODAC men's soccer tournament.
