Hampden-Sydney Draws With Randolph-Macon 1-1

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College scored an early goal in the first half of a 1-1 draw with Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival, Randolph-Macon College, Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

"Tough result tonight," said head coach Tommy DiNuzzo. "We had opportunities to go up 2-0 and didn't take them, and every team we play is good enough to battle back if you don't put them away, and that was the case tonight. Now it's onto a must win game at home on Saturday vs Randolph."

The Tigers did not waste much time taking the lead against the Randolph-Macon, as in the 14th minute freshman Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) took the ball onto his left foot and curled a perfect ball into the top right corner. He had another great chance six minutes later, having a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who took the ball away from Wumpini just before he took the shot.

The Yellow Jackets found the equalizer 22 minutes into the second half, as they finished off a close-range attempt following a cross into the box. Both sides had chances within the last 15 minutes, but both goalkeepers were up to the challenge making saves when called upon.

Sophomore Garrett Hodges (Virginia Beach) made five saves on six shots on target in the draw.

H-SC was outshot by Randolph-Macon 18-12 but had the edge in shots on target (7-6).

The Tigers will be back in action for senior night on Saturday, October 21, against Randolph College in what will be the final home game of the season. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
