Hampden-Sydney Fall In Season Opener Against Southern Virginia 172-71

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College fell in the season-opening matchup against Southern Virginia University 172-71, Friday night in Lexington, Virginia.

The Tigers competed in two relay events against the Knights, with those being the 200 Yard Medley and the 200 Yard Freestyle. In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, junior Quinn Hardimon (Alexandria), freshman Owen Renfrow (Bowling Green, KY), freshman Peter Gonzalez (Bakersfield, CA), and junior Brandon Hyde (Thousand Oaks, CA) finished second, posting a time of 1:49.03. Also competing in the 200 Yard Medley Relay was the foursome of freshman Ben Gerber (New Bern, NC), junior Cole Renfrow (Bowling Green, KY), junior Charles Adams (Mechanicsville), and senior Patrick Duffy (Charlotte, NC), who finished with a time of 1:54.72, good for fourth place. H-SC had three teams competing in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, with the top team of Hyde, Gonzalez, junior Matt Brooks (Springfield), and junior Cody Carnes (Hartfield), finishing fourth with a time of 1:38.54. Finishing fifth were Adams, Duffy, Gerber, and Cole Renfrow, with a 1:42.72, and in sixth were sophomore Jackson Piazza (Birmingham, AL), freshman Mason Brooking (Orange), freshman Ronan Self (Bowling Green), and junior Kevin Busch (Greensboro, NC), with a time of 1:52.57.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Brooks was the top finisher for the Tigers, posting a time of 1:59.91 to finish in third. Hardimon finished fourth in the event with a time of 2:01.95 and was followed up in fifth by Adams, who posted a time of 2:09.63.

Hyde, posted a 28.47 second time, just over a second off first place in the 50 Yard Backstroke, and was followed up in third place by Self's time of 29.76 seconds. Piazza was the final finisher for the Tigers in the event, posting a time of 31.89 seconds.

In the 50 Yard Breaststroke, Carnes grabbed third place with a 30.70 second time, followed up by the Renfrow brothers, with Owen finishing fourth with a 31.04 and Cole in fifth with a 31.52.

Carnes also led all finishers in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 56.89 seconds, good for a third-place finish. Gonzalez grabbed a fifth-place finish with a 1:01:65 and was followed up by Gerber in sixth with a time of 1:02.63.

In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Brooks and Duffy picked up third and fourth place finishes, with less than a second separating the two. Brooking grabbed a sixth-place finish in the event with a 28.80 second time.

The Tigers in the 100 Yard Freestyle took home a third-place finish with a 52.92 second time from Brooks. Busch finished in fifth with a 1:00.99 and was followed in sixth by Brooking's time of 1:07.54.

Hardimon in the 100 Yard Backstroke, finished in second place with a time of 58.81 seconds, only 1.01 seconds off first place. H-SC grabbed third, fourth, and fifth as well, with Gerber finishing third with a 1:05.91, Duffy in fourth with a 1:08,98, and Piazza with a 1:10.21.

Owen Renfrow grabbed second place in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:08.87 and was followed up by Cole Renfrow, who finished with a time of 1:10.57. Piazza finished in fourth with a 1:20.81 and Brooking posted a time of 1:33.55 for sixth place.

The Tigers had two finishers in the 500 Yard Freestyle, with Gonzalez being the top finisher in third place with a time of 5:35.43. Busch finished in fifth place with a time of 7:11.64.

Self was the top finisher for H-SC in the 50 Yard Butterfly with a time of 26.65, good for a fourth-place finish. Just under three-tenths of a second off Self's time, was Hyde in fifth place with a 26.94, and he was followed up by Busch in sixth with a time of 38.86.

In the final individual event of the meet, Carnes took home a second-place finish in the 200 Yard IM, posting a time of 2:25.06. Owen Renfrow grabbed fourth place with his time of 2:22.84 and was followed in fifth by Self's 2:29.15, and Adams' 2:30.21 in sixth.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, October 27 when they travel to Randolph College to take on the WildCats in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in Lynchburg.
