DANVILLE, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College battled to a scoreless draw in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action against Averett University, Friday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
"Soccer is a cruel game and although we created multiple exceptional chances, we couldn't quite find the back of the net," said head coach
Tommy DiNuzzo. "Averett is a good team and hats off to its goalkeeper. Time to shift our focus to hosting our rival on Wednesday."
The Cougars got the best chance in the first half of action as they fired off a shot from point-blank range, only for sophomore
Garrett Hodges (Virginia Beach) to palm the ball away and out of bounds. That was one of two saves that the sophomore had to make in the first half to keep the game at 0-0.
The second half was all H-SC on offense, as they put relentless pressure on the Averett defense and called its goalie into action multiple times. The Tigers had three great chances to score in the second half, with two one-on-ones being saved by the goalie and the other being pushed just wide of the net past a diving keeper. The pressure on the backline of Averett culminated in a penalty for H-SC with under a minute left in the game. Freshman
Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) stepped up to take the penalty after earning it and had his shot attempt saved by the goalie before sophomore
Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) fired the rebound off the crossbar, as the ball refused to find the back of the net for the Tigers.
H-SC was outshot in the game 18-15, with both sides putting six of its shot attempts on target.
Hodges earned his second consecutive draw, making six saves and earning a second career shutout.
The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, October 18 when they play host to visiting Randolph-Macon in what will be their Pink Game in support of breast cancer awareness. Kick-off for the ODAC clash is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
