Ashland, VA – The Hampden-Sydney College men's soccer team fell for the first time this season in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opening game against Randolph-Macon College, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Nunnally Field in Ashland.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board first less than eight minutes into the contest, as sophomore Teddy Westervelt made a few dribbles in the box and then beat a Tiger defender before beating the keeper for the opening goal. Just over a minute before the halftime whistle, junior
Stefan Ngoh (Goldvein) stood over a free kick and played a simple ball across the edge of the box to senior
Matt Johnson (Virginia Beach), who ran from outside of the box to take the shot first-time with power and blasted a terrific shot past the keeper to even the game at one going into halftime.
Randolph-Macon broke the deadlock in the 77th minute as senior Colton Howell played a ball with the side of his foot to fell classmate Bryce Martin who chipped a ball over the top of the keeper for the game winning goal, and secured a 2-1 victory for the Yellow Jackets.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, September 24, when they take on Averett University in their first matchup as ODAC opponents. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
