Lexington, VA – Freshman
Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) scored the winning goal and added an assist in the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers soccer team's, 3-2, victory over the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels, Sunday afternoon at Alston Parker Watt Field.
The game only stayed scoreless for 13 minutes and six seconds as the Tigers converted a great chance from junior
Stefan Ngoh (Goldvein) as he volleyed home a blocked shot from junior
Declan Shaw (Durham, NC). H-SC struck again in the 32nd minute, as Boerner hit a perfect cross from the left side of the field to the back post to find his fellow classmate
Zakky Johnston (Meherrin), who headed it across the face of goal and into the side netting to double the lead. The Stormy Petrels answered 10 minutes later following a free kick that found junior Felipe Araujo (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and his shot rolled in front of the goal, and was tapped in by junior Tyler Castor (Brookline, MA) to cut the Tiger lead to one and make it a 2-1 game at half.
Oglethorpe tied it up exactly 10 minutes after the second half kick-off as the Stormy Petrels got a turnover in the Hampden-Sydney end, and the ball found junior Ian Farquhar (East Cobb, GA) who laid a ball off for junior Javier Aponte (Stone Mountain, GA) for the equalizer. H-SC broke the deadlock 11 minutes later as Boerner ran onto a ball from the defensive end, and took a few dribbles to beat the defense, before a left-footed effort curled perfectly into the side netting. Boerner made the difference as the Tiger's defense held the Stormy Petrels scoreless the last 30 minutes to take a 3-2 victory.
The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, September 21, when they open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on the road at Randolph-Macon College. The game will begin at 4 p.m. at Nunnally Field in Ashland, VA.
