Lexington, VA – Junior
John Alexander (Wake Forest, NC) and freshman
Zakky Johnston (Meherrin) led the charge in front of net, each scoring a pair of goals for the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers' 5-2 victory over the Emory University Eagles, Friday night at Alston Parker Watt Field.
The Tigers got off to a dream start early in the half, as junior
Declan Shaw (Durham, NC) finished first time with his left foot, off the perfect touch pass over the top of the defense by fellow classmate
Stefan Ngoh (Goldvein) to take an early lead after nine and a half minutes played. H-SC doubled its tally two minutes later after a free kick found the head of senior
Boyce Purdie (Clinton, NC) and he fought again for a second header which found the run of Alexander who beat the keeper. Instead of scoring Alexander was finding a teammate for the finish, as his centering pass found Johnston who took a touch to his right and beat the keeper to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the half. The Eagles clawed one back five minutes later as senior Trey Riley (Milton, GA) took a shot that was saved by sophomore
Connor Kitson (Wake Forest, NC), but freshman Josh Grand (Atlanta, GA) pounced on the rebound and put it home. Emory cut the H-SC lead to one on a great direct free kick finish by senior Alejandro Gomez (Caracas, Venezuela). The Tigers were not done in the first half, as less than a minute later Johnston doubled his tally making a great run and move to get by an Emory defender and calmly beat the keeper to give H-SC a 4-2 lead at halftime and cap off a six-goal first half.
The offensive display by both sides did not carry over to the second half as only one goal was scored in the final 45 minutes. That goal came from the Tigers in the 53rd minute from Alexander who doubled his tally on the night after taking a touch following the feed from Shaw to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead, which would hold for H-SC to take the win over Emory.
The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, September 18, when they travel to Washington and Lee University to take on Oglethorpe University. The non-conference matchup will begin at 12 p.m. in Lexington, VA at Alston Parker Watt Field.
