Hampden-Sydney Announces 2022 Soccer Schedule

5/20/2022 10:48:00 AM

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Hampden-Sydney College sixth-year head soccer coach Tommy DiNuzzo has announced his program's upcoming 2022 schedule that includes 10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) games and an appearance in the Washington and Lee Tournament in September.

"As usual, we've put together a very strong out of conference schedule that we believe will help prepare us for a very competitive ODAC regular season," said DiNuzzo.  "We're looking forward to it and August can't come soon enough."

H-SC will have three tune-up scrimmages, prior to the start of the regular season, as they face Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m., followed by two games at City Stadium in Richmond against the University of Mary Washington and Christopher Newport University on Sunday, Aug 28.

The Tigers will kick-off the regular season with three straight home games starting on Thursday, Sept 1 at 7 p.m. on Hellmuth-Gibson Field in a non-conference matchup against Greensboro (NC) College.  The two schools last met in 2013, with H-SC coming away with a 1-0 home win.  The Pride finished the 2021 season with an overall record of 8-8-2, while going 4-1-2 in the USA South.

On Sept 3, William Peace (NC) University comes to Hellmuth-Gibson Field for a 7 p.m. kick-off.  The Pacers are coming off a 12-2-1 season in 2021 and a trip to the USA South semifinals.  The two teams were scheduled to meet last year, but the game had to be canceled.  This will be the first meeting since 2018 when the match ended in a tie.
To close out the three game home stand, the Tigers will host Mary Baldwin University on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.  Last year the match ended in a 1-1 tie and the Fighting Squirrels would go on to finish the year with an overall record of 5-10-1 and 2-5 in the USA South.

H-SC will play its first regular season road game when they travel to Rocky Mount, NC to face North Carolina Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m.  The Fighting Bishops had a short but successful season in 2021, compiling a record of 5-2-1, while finishing 5-1 in the USA South.  In 2019, the Tigers fell to NC Wesleyan in the UMW Classic 2-0.
The next weekend H-SC will participate in Washington and Lee's two day tournament in Lexington.  On Friday, Sept. 16, they will face Emory (GA) University at 7 p.m. This is the first time the two teams have met since 2010, when the Eagles shutout the Tigers, 3-0.  On Sunday, Sept 18 H-SC will complete the tournament as they face Oglethorpe (GA) University at 12 p.m.  The Stormy Petrels compete in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) and this will be the fifth time the teams have met, with the Tigers holding a 3-1 advantage.

H-SC will begin ODAC play on the road in Ashland on Wednesday, Sept. 21, as they face archrival Randolph-Macon College.  The Yellow Jackets made it to the ODAC semifinals last season after finishing 10-4-3 overall and 5-1-3 in the conference.  In last year's match-up, the Tigers scored twice in the second half, but ultimately fell by one goal, 3-2.
On Saturday, Sept 24, H-SC returns home for another ODAC match, when they host Averett University.  The Cougars will be competing in their first ODAC season, after previously being a member of the USA South.  Last season, they finished 9-7-2 and 4-1-2 in conference, which included a 3-2 win over the Tigers in Danville.

Christopher Newport visits Hellmuth-Gibson Field on Wednesday. Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. to face H-SC in a non-conference match.  The Captains won the 2021 Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.  This will be the first time in 16 years the two teams have met, with the Tigers' only win coming in 1998.
Saturday, Oct. 1, begins the final stretch of the season with H-SC visiting Washington and Lee for the first of eight straight ODAC contests.  The Generals defeated the Tigers last year in the ODAC quarterfinals and advanced all the way to the Final Four of the NCAA Soccer National Tournament.  Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.

H-SC returns home on Oct. 5 for a 7 p.m. kick-off against Roanoke College.  The Maroons have won four straight over the Tigers, including last year's game, 3-0 at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
Randolph College will host H-SC on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in Lynchburg.  The Tigers will look to avenge last season's 3-2 home loss to the Wildcats, which snapped a four game series win streak.  Randolph advanced to the 2021 ODAC Championship, while finishing the season 14-3-2, 5-2-2.

A three game, and final, home stand of the season begins on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. as H-SC hosts Shenandoah University.  The Tigers have won 12 straight games over the Hornets, with the most recent win coming in a 2-1 decision in Winchester.  A regular season match with Eastern Mennonite will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15, and then H-SC will play its final home game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. (Senior Day) against Virginia Wesleyan University.  The Marlins and Tigers have split their last four games.

Prior to the ODAC Tournament, H-SC will travel to Ferrum College on Oct. 23 and on to the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, Oct. 26  to finish the regular season.  The Tigers have won six in a row over the Panthers, who finished 2-15 last season, while the Hornets have won the last two over H-SC, winning 2-0 and 2-1 (OT).

The Tigers completed 2021 at 6-8-2 overall, 3-5-1 in the ODAC.  Coach DiNuzzo has won 43 games in five seasons with the H-SC program, which includes 27 ODAC wins.  His teams have qualified for four ODAC Tournaments in his previous five seasons and he has 58 total career victories.
