Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Tigers Top Randolph At Home, 19-1

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Stellar play from the Tigers' goalies, combined with an offensive outburst, which resulted in a nine goal first quarter, helped pace Hampden-Sydney lacrosse to a 19-1 win over Randolph College, Saturday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.  The victory is the second straight for the Tigers and their third win overall in the ODAC Conference.  Junior Nick Scheer (Lakeville, MN) came off the bench to score a team high three goals, while the team outshot the Wildcats, 43-8.

Sophomore Ford Burke (Richmond, VA), began the game by scoring the first two goals of the first quarter.  His first goal was assisted by Senior Bobby Clagett (Brandywine, MD), while Senior Sean Duffy (Ambler, PA) fed him the ball on the second goal.  A few minutes later, both Clagett and Duffy would find the net, giving Hampden-Sydney the early lead, 4-0.  The scoring continued as Sophomore Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) increased the lead to five, which was followed by Freshman Zach Hanzlik (Vienna, VA) who skipped one passed the keeper, after taking a pass from Senior Marshall Flagg (Williamsburg, VA)Senior Logan Mitchell (Mt. Pleasant, SC) found a cutting Freshman Jack Stepanian (Richmond, VA) to score the seventh goal of the quarter and then Junior Talmadge Hope (Richmond, VA) set up Mitchell for a the 8-0 advantage.  The quarter would end with Sophomore Matt Gemmell (Winston-Salem, NC) scoring on an unassisted goal.  Goals from Hope, Senior Andrew Shanley (Leesburg, VA) and Freshman Griff Ray (Salem, VA) rounded out the half, as the Tigers went into the break leading, 12-0.

Hampden-Sydney stormed out of the locker room as Scheer scored his first two goals of the game and a minute later, Sophomore Luke Helfgott (Arlington, VA) created a scoring an opportunity as he powered his shot into the back of the net.  After a Tigers penalty, the defense created a turnover, taking the ball away from the Randolph man-up offense, which allowed Senior Nick Stepanian (Richmond, VA) and Junior Max Koontz (Winston-Salem, NC) to move the ball back down the field resulting in a man-down goal from N. Stepanian.  The Wildcats would eventually get on the board but Helfgott, Scheer and Hamzlik answered with three straight goals, to round out the third quarter scoring.  The fourth quarter saw Hampden-Sydney slow things down and work the ball around as an offense.  When the final horn sounded, the Tigers would come away with their eighth win of the season, 19-1.

As team, Hampden-Sydney dominated in all statistical categories.  They were a perfect 15-15 on clear opportunities and won 19 of 23 face-offs.  In addition, the Tigers caused 25 turnovers, while the goalkeepers only allowed one goal on the day.  Hampden-Sydney will be back at home this Wednesday, April 13, as they welcome Virginia Wesleyan University to Lewis C. Everett Stadium for another ODAC match-up.  Face-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
