Bobby Clagett (Brandywine, MD) and
Sean Duffy (Ambler, PA) combined for ten goals (five each), while the defense forced sixteen turnovers, pacing the Tigers to a 24-7 win over visiting Virginia Wesleyan University, Wednesday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. With the victory, Hampden-Sydney has now won three straight, moving to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC.
The Tigers' scoring started within the first minute of the first quarter, when Junior
Kevin Marshall (Mt. Pleasant, SC) took a pass from Duffy and fired it past the Marlin's keeper. Five minutes later Duffy scored the first of his five goals, giving Hampden-Sydney the lead, 2-0
. Freshman
Zach Hanzlik (Vienna, VA) and
Clagett would put the Tigers up by four goals, but Virginia Wesleyan answered with a score of their own. However, Duffy and Clagett proceeded to score the next five goals to close out the quarter leading, 9-1. Hampden-Sydney would outscore the Marlins in the second quarter 5-2, with Clagett (2), Sophomore
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA), Junior
Matt Shipman (Mt. Pleasant, SC) and Duffy each adding to the lead. As the two teams went into the half, the Tigers found themselves with a double-digit advantage, 14-3.
Freshman
Campion White (Apex, NC), who got the start at midfield, began the third quarter with an unassisted goal. That would begin the run of seven straights goals for Hampden-Sydney with Junior

Leone (Man-Up) held them at bay giving the Tigers the win.
Hampden-Sydney out shot Virginia Wesleyan 51-28, while finishing 18-19 on clear opportunities. In addition, they were a perfect 1-1 in man-up opportunities. The Tigers will be back in action this Saturday, April 16, as they travel to Ashland, VA to face Randolph-Macon College. Face-off is scheduled for 1 P.M.
