GREENSBORO, Nc. -- Senior
Bobby Clagett (Brandywine, MD) scored four goals, while Sophomore
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) dished out three assists to lead the Tigers to an 18-8 ODAC road win over Guilford College. This was the final regular season road game for Hampden-Sydney and with the win, the Tigers moved to 11-5 on the season and 6-3 in the conference.Â
Sophomore
Ford Burke (Richmond, VA) got the scoring started in the first quarter, getting around his defender for the unassisted goal. On Hampden-Sydney's next possession, Senior
Sean Duffy (Ambler, PA) took a pass from Junior
Kevin Marshall (Mt. Pleasant, SC) and skipped one into the net for the two goal lead. The Quakers would answer, but O'Brien found a cutting Clagett to stop any momentum, as he fired one passed the goalie, increasing the lead to 3-1. O'Brien would then get in on the scoring action, as he worked his way around the defense to score his 31
st goal of the season. After a Guilford penalty, Sophomore
Patrick Saunders (Alexandria, VA) was able to take advantage of the man-up opportunity by scoring on an outside shot, giving the Tigers a four goal advantage. After the goal, Hampden-Sydney was charged with a penalty to go man-down, but after a save by Senior
Will Perry (Roanoke, VA) the Tigers clear opportunity ended with another Clagett goal. The Quakers would cut the deficit to three, but Freshman
Campion White (Apex, NC) and Senior
Marshall Flagg (Williamsburg, VA) ended the quarter with two straight goals, to go back up by five, 8-3.
Three minutes into the second quarter, Hampden-Sydney had a man-up opportunity, after a Guilford penalty, which saw Clagett and O'Brien (Assist) hook up again for the score. A few possessions later, and after patiently working the ball around, Duffy tossed a pass to Marshall in front of the crease for the Tigers' 10
th goal of the game, and Senior
Andrew Shanley (Leesburg, VA) would add the 11
th after a quick pass from Freshman
Zack Hanzlik (Vienna, VA). Less than two minutes later, Senior
Logan Mitchell (Mt. Pleasant, SC) was able to cut through the middle of the defenders to make the score 12-3 on an assist from Sophomore
Matt Gemmell (Winston-Salem, NC). While the Quakers would score their 4
th goal of the game, Hampden-Sydney's defense dug in and finished off the half leading by a score of 12-4.
After a back and forth to start the third quarter, Guilford would get on the board first, but after that score, both goalies were able to shut down the offenses, not allowing any scores. However, as the quarter was coming to an end, the Quakers added two more goals, to trim the Tigers' lead to 12-7, but before the clock could hit zero, Freshman
Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) won the face-off and took it the distance, giving Hampden-Sydney the lead 13-7.
The Tigers carried the momentum over into the fourth quarter, as Duffy scored first, which was followed by a goal from Junior
Max Koontz (Winston-Salem, NC) and then a behind the back, over the shoulder goal by Marshall. The scoring continued on a man-up opportunity, when Saunders found Clagett in the middle of the defense to give Hampden-Sydney the double-digit lead, 17-7. After another defensive stop, Flagg took the ball and drove towards the goal, firing one just under the crossbar for the Tigers' fifth goal of the quarter. With 2:15 remaining in the game, Guilford cut the lead to 18-8, however that is as close as they could get, as Hampden-Sydney would pick up the road ODAC win.
Hampden-Sydney will return home for their final regular season game on Saturday against #11 nationally ranked University of Lynchburg. Not only does the game have tournament seeding ramifications, but the Tigers will honor eleven Seniors, who will be playing their last game at home. The ceremony will begin prior to the 1 p.m. face-off.Â
