Hampden-Sydney Falls To Lynchburg, 13-10, On Senior Day

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Eleven Tigers walked onto Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium for the final time in their career as Hampden-Sydney welcomed in #11 nationally ranked University of Lynchburg Saturday afternoon.  After an emotional Senior Day pre-game ceremony, Senior Bobby Clagett (Brandywine, MD) kept the Tigers in the game with four goals, but it would not be enough, as the Hornets came away with the close 13-10 ODAC victory.

The first quarter began with both teams feeling each other out and at the 10:54 mark, Lynchburg would get on the board first on an unassisted goal.  A minute later they scored again and followed that up with their third straight goal to take the early lead, 3-0.  However, Senior Sean Duffy (Ambler, PA) answered after taking a pass from Sophomore Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA), which was followed by a goal by Sophomore Ford Burke (Richmond, VA), assisted by Senor Marshall Flagg (Williamsburg, VA,) to trim the lead to one, 3-2, as the quarter ended.

Lynchburg would jump back out by two again to start the second quarter, but another goal from Clagett made the score a close, 4-3.  However, the Hornets tried to pull away by scoring three straight goals and with two minutes left in the half, the Tigers trailed by their largest margin of the game, 7-3.  As time was expiring, and the half approaching, they would get one back as Junior Talmadge Hope (Richmond, VA) found the back of the next on quick pass from Clagett.

O'Brien and Hope began a run for Hampden-Sydney in the third quarter, scoring two straight, but that was matched by Lynchburg, who put together two straight goals of their own.  However, Hope and Clagett would start the run again with two mores goals, which was followed by a score from Junior Nick Morgan (Issaquah, WA) to, once again, pull to within one, 9-8.  After goalkeeper, Senior Will Perry (Roanoke, VA) had to leave the game due to being hit until the chin, the Hornets were able to get one more score, taking the lead 10-8, as the quarter came to an end.

Clagett would score the only goal of the fourth quarter for the Tigers, as Lynchburg was able get the ball passed Sophomore Peter Smith (Warrenton, VA), who came in the game in relief of Perry, three more times.  Those goals put some distance between the two teams on the scoreboard, and that is how the game would end, with Hampden-Sydney suffering the loss, 13-10.

The Tigers finish the regular season with an overall record of 11-6 and an ODAC record of 6-4.  They will wait to find out where they will travel for a quarterfinal game in the ODAC Conference Tournament on Tuesday.  In the meantime, and despite the loss, they will continue to celebrate the accomplishments of their 11 seniors and the impact they have made on the Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse program.
