HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman Johnny Oates II (Chester) had four hits and three RBIs, and senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) added two hits and two RBIs in the second game, while freshman Christian Lancaster (Danville) had three hits and one RBI in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader at home against Bridgewater College on Saturday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) gained the pitching win in relief in the 10-5 nightcap, while junior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) took the mound setback in the 4-2 opener for the host Tigers (18-11, 10-5) against the visiting Eagles (21-12, 8-6).

In game two, H-SC scored 10 runs on 15 hits with one error … scoring three runs in the first inning, six runs in the third and one run in the seventh. BC scored five runs on 10 hits with one error … scoring one run in the third inning, one run in the fourth and three runs in the sixth.

Highlights for the Tigers in the nightcap included Oates (4-4, 3 RBIs) with RBI doubles in both the first and seventh innings, and a run-scoring single in the third, along with a two-run double by Karnes (2-5, 2 RBIs) in the first. In addition, junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (4-5, RBI), sophomore Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (3-4, RBI) and freshman Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-5, RBI) each contributed RBI singles, while senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) (RBI) and junior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) (RBI) each added ground ball RBIs—Badin's on a well-executed sacrifice bunt with runners on first and third.

Tappy (4-4) pitched 4.0 innings of relief for the mound win, scattering eight hits and five runs, four earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Senior Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach) started and pitched the first 2.0 scoreless innings before leaving for the second-straight week with an injury, yielding just one hit with one strikeout and two walks. Senior Trenton Tiller (Powhatan) tossed a scoreless and hitless seventh inning with one strikeout and no walks. Senior Kieran Conway (Chesapeake) pitched the final 2.0 shutout innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and no walks.

In game one, H-SC scored two runs on 11 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the fourth inning and one run in the eighth. BC scored four runs on seven hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the fifth inning, one run in the eighth and one run in the ninth.

Highlights for the Tigers in the opener included an RBI single by Lancaster (3-4, RBI) in the eighth after the first run by the Garnet & Grey came courtesy of a wild pitch in the fourth—scored by freshman Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-4). Karnes (2-4) had two hits in the contest.

Woodall (1-2) started and pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with five strikeouts and four walks. Freshman Lance Tate (Stanardsville) tossed 3.0 innings, scattering three hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.
