Hampden-Sydney Falls At Nationally-Ranked Randolph-Macon 5-2

ASHLAND, Va. -- Junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) had two hits, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 5-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision on the road at archrival Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday afternoon in Ashland. Senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) added one hit and one RBI on the day, while freshman Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) took the pitching loss for the visiting Tigers (18-12, 10-6 ODAC) against the nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets (21-7, 10-4 ODAC).

H-SC scored two runs on four hits with no errors … scoring one run each in the first and second innings. R-MC, ranked 30th in this week's Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Division III Poll, scored five runs on six hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and one run in the seventh.

In the first, Badin (1-3, RBI) opened the contest with a walk and advanced to third on a one-out single up the middle by Boyce (2-4). Senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) (1-2) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, before Badin crossed the plate courtesy of a passed ball to make it 1-0.

In the second, freshman Christian Lancaster (Lancaster) (0-2) walked with one out, advanced to second on another passed ball with two outs, and scored when Badin provided an RBI single through the left side for a 2-1 lead.

In the eighth, sophomore Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (0-5) reached on a fielding error to open the at-bat and advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Boyce walked and Karnes singled to second base to load the bases with no outs. Unfortunately, a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a pop-fly on the infield ended the threat.

Reynolds (2-3) started and pitched the first 4.0 innings, scattering three hits and three runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and four walks. Classmate Lance Tate (Stanardsville) tossed 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Sophomore Ryan Portes (Midlothian) pitched the final 2.0 innings, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC and R-MC will play again on Wednesday, April 20, at 3:30 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Please be sure to check our website at hscathletics.com for the latest weather-related schedule adjustments.
