Hampden-Sydney earns ODAC win, defeats Bridgewater 10-6

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – After two straight road wins, the Hampden-Sydney College Lacrosse team returned home on Saturday to face Bridgewater College in an ODAC Conference matchup.  The Eagles came into Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium, sitting in first place in the ODAC, having won four straight games, while averaging 15 goals per game.  The Tigers were on a two game win streak, also averaging double-digit goals, however it was their defense that would dominate the game. Senior Will Perry (Roanoke, VA) finished with 12 saves, while the team as a whole, caused a total of 24 turnovers, helping Hampden-Sydney pick up the home conference win, 10-6.

Bridgewater jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, towards the end of the first quarter, but Senior Sean Duffy (Ambler, PA) found the back of the net, with just three seconds reaming, to trim the lead to one goal.  His goal was the start of three straight, as Senior Bobby Clagett (Brandywine, MD) tied the game at 2-2, after taking a pass from Sophomore Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) at the beginning of the second quarter and he followed that up with an unassisted goal three minutes later, giving the Tigers their first lead of the game, 3-2.  The Eagles answered back to, once again, even the game, but Freshman Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) ran past a defender and converted a shot to reclaim the advantage, 4-3.  For the remaining five minutes of the half, Juniors Nick Morgan (Issaquah, WA), Jack Limon (Gainesville, FL) and Jack Fechter (Potomac, MD) anchored a defense that kept the Eagles from getting off any clean shots, which allowed Hampden-Sydney to hold onto the one goal lead going into the locker room.

O'Brien scored the first of his three goals, at the 12:04 mark of the third quarter, after Sophomore Drew Duffy (Virginia Beach, VA) found him cutting towards the crease.  Bridgewater had an answer, but O'Brien would do it again, this time working around the defense, scoring an unassisted goal.  Hampden-Sydney began the fourth quarter with the two goal advantage, but the Eagles looked to make a comeback by trimming the lead to only one goal.  However, the Tigers' offense came alive as O'Brien, Sean Duffy and Sophomore Patrick Saunders (Alexandria, VA) fired off four straight goals to grab their biggest lead of the game, 10-5.  Bridgewater would get one back to make it 10-6, but as time ran out, Hampden-Sydney picked up its first ODAC victory of the season.

With the win, the Tigers move to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC.  As a team they out shot the Eagles 54-28, while also taking advantage of the one man-up opportunity they had in the game.  In addition, Hampden-Sydney finished the game 20-23 on clear opportunities.  The Tigers will be back in action this Wednesday evening as they travel to Ferrum College for another ODAC contest.  Face-off is scheduled for 7:00pm and can be seen, along with live stats, at www.hascathletics.com
