Tigers Pick Up Road Win Over Mary Washington, 17-9

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse team traveled to Mary Washington on Wednesday, for their last non-conference game of the season.  After a big win on Saturday in the Capital Classic, the Tigers were looking to get back-to-back wins this week.  Senior Bobby Clagget (Brandywine, MD) and Sophomore Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) would pace their team, combining for ten goals and four assists to secure the win, 17-9.

To start the game, Clagett put Hampden-Sydney on the board first, as he took a pass from Sophomore Drew Duffy (Virginia Beach, VA) and found the back of the net.  On the next possession, O'Brien, scored the Tiger's second goal of the day (assisted by Clagett), and he followed that up by scoring two more, within less than a minute of each other, forcing the Eagles to call a timeout.  After the timeout, Mary Washington cut the lead to three goals, but with 1:34 remaining in the quarter, Junior Kevin Marshall (Mt. Pleasant, SC) answered to put Hampden-Sydney back up by four goals, 5-1.  As time was expiring, Sophomore Ford Burke(Richmond, VA) continued the Tigers' offensive output, scoring their sixth goal of the game, to end the quarter with the five goal advantage.

As the second quarter began, Burke wasted no time, capitalizing on the face-off win to score, only :24 seconds in.  Twenty seconds later, Clagett would score his second goal of the game, giving Hampden-Sydney its largest lead, 8-1 and after a defensive stand, O'Brien connected on his fourth scoring opportunity  The scoring continued at the 6:45 mark of the quarter, as Clagett, once again, found the back of the net to increase the lead to 10-1.  The Eagles would eventually get on the board again, but Senior Sean Duffy (Ambler, PA) quickly answered for the Tigers, sending them into halftime with the lead, 11-2.

Mary Washington struck first in the third, but Clagett picked up where he left off in the first half, by scoring his fourth goal of the game, giving the Tigers the nine goal advantage, 12-3.  Two minutes later, Burke scored his third goal (assisted by O'Brien), which was followed up by goals from Freshman Gaines Weis (Richmond, VA) and Clagett (assisted by Stepanian).  After the Eagles put their fourth goal on the scoreboard, O'Brien found the net (assisted by Clagett) to increase the lead to twelve goals, as Senior Will Perry (Roanoke, VA) would make a save to close out the quarter, with the Tigers leading, 16-4.

Three minutes into the fourth and final quarter, Mary Washington scored three straight goals to cut the lead to single digits, 16-7.  However, Senior Logan Mitchell (Mt. Pleasant, SC) answered with 5:23 left in the game to help Hampden-Sydney go back ahead by ten, 17-7.  After a Tigers' penalty, the Eagles took advantage of the man-up opportunity, scoring the eighth goal of the game and then added another to pull to within 17-9, but the deficit was too much, as Hampden-Sydney would come away with their fifth win of the season.

Clagett and O'Brien led the Tigers with five goals and two assists apiece.  Junior Nick Morgan (Issaquah, WA) finished the game with a team high five ground balls, while Will Perry got the win in the cage, saving 15 shots.  Hampden-Sydney will return to action this Saturday at home as they face Bridgewater College in an ODAC matchup.  Faceoff is scheduled for 1:00pm.
