scored two goals, but nationally-ranked No. 18 Hampden-Sydney College dropped a closely-played 8-6 non-conference lacrosse decision to nationally-ranked No. 12 Cabrini (PA) University on Tuesday at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Sophomore
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) added three assists and senior goalie
Will Perry (Roanoke) had a career-high 24 saves for the host Tigers (1-2), who trailed 7-4 at halftime and only allowed one goal in the second half (fourth quarter) against the visiting Cavaliers (2-1)—led by Dillon McManus with three goals.
CU scored the first three goals of another early-season battle of Top 20 programs, leading 3-0 just 3:22 into the contest. H-SC got on the board at 11:29 with a goal from Duffy (2g), assisted by O'Brien (3a), but the Cavaliers answered back to lead 4-1 at 8:57 of the first quarter. Clagett (2g) tallied a goal at 8:09, assisted by sophomore
Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) (2a), but the visitors added two more goals to lead 6-2 after the first 15 minutes.
The Tigers scored the first goal of the second quarter as Clagett was successful with an assist from O'Brien to make it 6-3 at 9:21. CU added another goal to lead 7-3 with 7:47 left in the quarter. Hope (2g) scored at 6:26, aided by O'Brien, for the 7-4 margin at the intermission.
The second half became a defensive battle highlighted by 14 stops by Perry, including seven saves each in both the third and fourth quarters. H-SC's defense did not allow any goals in the third quarter, and yielded only one goal in the fourth quarter. The Tigers scored the only goal of the third period when Hope tallied with just two-seconds on the clock, assisted by sophomore
Ford Burke (Richmond) (1a), and it was a 7-5 contest after 45 minutes.
H-SC scored what would be its final goal of the contest with 11:30 remaining when Duffy was on target again, assisted by Saunders, to make it a one-goal game at 7-6. CU managed its last goal at 9:55 to provide for the final margin in the well-played and hard-fought battle between the two teams.
Perry started and played the entire contest in goal, yielding the eight goals with his career-high 24 saves. Freshman
Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) was 4-15 on face-offs, while senior captain
Presley Miller (Annapolis, MD) was 1-3. Miller, O'Brien, senior
Grayson Ackaway (Virginia Beach) and junior
Aidan Byrne (Charlotte, NC) each had three ground balls for the Tigers, and Kilfeather added two caused turnovers.
CU was led by McManus with his three goals, while Matt Nestler played the entire game in goal, yielding the six goals with 14 saves. Jake Huey was 12-15 on face-offs with 11 ground balls.
