Johnny Oates II (Chester) had two hits and one RBI, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 7-6 non-conference baseball road win at Averett University on Tuesday in Danville. Sophomore
Ryan Portes (Midlothian) earned the pitching win in relief, while senior
Kieran Conway (Chesapeake) gained the save for the visiting Tigers (3-1), who rallied from an early 4-0 deficit after three innings with a decisive four-run eighth against the host Cougars (1-4).
H-SC had seven runs on 11 hits with no errors … scoring three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the eighth. AU scored six runs on 12 hits with three errors … scoring one run in the first inning, two runs in the second, one run in the third, one run in the eighth and one run in the ninth.
Highlights in the fifth for the Tigers included the first sac fly RBI for Beavers (0-2, 2 RBIs), along with a pair of run-scoring singles by senior
Ethan Badin (Richmond) (1-5, RBI) and senior captain
Max Lipscomb (Virginia Beach) (1-4, RBI), respectively. In the eighth, Beavers provided another sac fly RBI, while Oates (2-3, RBI) and freshman
Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-1, RBI) each added RBI singles.
Portes (1-0) tossed a perfect seventh inning for H-SC, retiring all three batters he faced via strikeouts swinging. Conway (2) pitched the ninth, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Freshman
Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) started and pitched the first 2.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.
H-SC is scheduled to play three games at the Armstrong Invitational hosted by Methodist University this weekend, February 26-27, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The Tigers will face DeSales (PA) University on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. and Penn State Abingdon on Saturday at 5 p.m., before playing host Methodist on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m.
