Hampden-Sydney Plays At No. 1 Randolph-Macon On Wednesday Night

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road at archrival and nationally-ranked No. 1 Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball action on Wednesday night, February 16, at 7 p.m. in Crenshaw Gym in Ashland. The Tigers are 12-9 overall, 7-7 in the ODAC (T-7th), while the top-ranked Yellow Jackets are 22-1 overall, 14-0 in the ODAC (1st). The game will be broadcast and can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, pregame airing at 6:30 p.m. R-MC will provide a live video stream at rmcathletics.com.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the third-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon College (AL) from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 112-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Caleb is 28-26 overall at the College, including 16-18 in ODAC games.

Scouting Hampden-Sydney
The Tigers lost their most recent contest at home against Bridgewater, 75-65, on Feb. 14. H-SC has three players averaging in double figures among seven scoring at least 6.7 points per game. Junior guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) leads the balanced-scoring team with his 13.1 points, adding 4.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists, followed by sophomore forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) (11.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, 57% FGs) and fifth-year forward and team captain Jake Hahn (Ruckersville) (10.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists). The Tigers are shooting 45% (581-1291) from the field, including 34% (168-498) on three-point field goals, and 73% (250-344) at the free throw line. H-SC averages 75.2 points, and allows 68.7 points, for a +6.5 scoring margin.

Scouting No. 1 Randolph-Macon
The Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 1 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, are coached by seventh-year head coach Josh Merkel and last played on Feb. 12 at home against Shenandoah, winning 102-60. R-MC has won 16-straight games this season, and 39 of its past 40 contests (2019-20). The Yellow Jackets have also won 43-straight home games (2017-18), the longest current streak in NCAA Division III. R-MC has been led this season by three-time All-American and ODAC Player of the Year, fifth-year guard Buzz Anthony, averaging 18.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.1 assists, along with 58 three-pointers, followed by junior All-American forward Miles Mallory (15.7 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.4 blocks) and junior guard Josh Talbert (11.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists). The Yellow Jackets shoot 50% (697-1404) from the field, including 37% (199-532) on three-pointers, and 70% (190-270) at the line; scoring 77.5 points, and yielding just 59.0 points, for a +18.5 scoring margin.

Series History (Since 1956)
H-SC and R-MC are playing for the 155th time since 1956. The Yellow Jackets lead the series, 99-55, though their advantage as members of the ODAC since 1989 is closer at 47-31. R-MC has won nine-straight games between the two schools. The last win in the series by the Tigers was a 63-56 home victory on February 1, 2017.

First Meeting This Season
Ryan Clements and sophomore guard/forward Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) each scored 11 points, but H-SC dropped an 83-63 ODAC decision at home to top-ranked R-MC. Davidson Hubbard added 10 points for the host Tigers, who led 36-31 at halftime and were within 67-61 with 4:02 remaining. DaQuan Morris scored a game-high 21 points off the bench for the visiting Yellow Jackets, who outscored H-SC 52-27 in the second half, including a late 16-0 run during the final three-plus minutes.

H-SC remains on the road for its final regular season game at ODAC member Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. in Winchester. The 2022 ODAC Tournament begins on Monday night, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. with two first-round contests featuring the four lowest seeded teams in the 10-team field that will be announced on Saturday (Feb. 19) night. The top six seeds earn automatic advancement to the ODAC Quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 24, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center in Salem. The first-round contests will match the #7 seed hosting the #10 seed, and the #8 seed hosting the #9 seed. The ODAC Semifinals will be played on Saturday, Feb. 26, beginning at 1 p.m. and the ODAC Championship will take place on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.
