Tigers Hand Randolph-Macon First ODAC Loss

The Hampden-Sydney Basketball team handed Randolph-Macon their first ODAC loss with a 63-56 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Randolph-Macon led 9-8 at the 13:31 mark, but the Tigers gradually began pulling away as they held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for nearly eight minutes as H-SC scored 13 straight to go ahead 21-9 with 6:16 left in the half.
  • The R-MC offense woke up with a Jon Nowell jumper at 5:44, and it helped spark a flurry of threes to end the half, but H-SC led 32-23 going into halftime
  • Hampden-Sydney started off on fire in the second half, outscoring R-MC 7-2 in the first couple minutes to take a 15-point lead.
  • H-SC continued to lead by double digits, 43-30, at the 13:43 mark, but Montese Adams scored seven straight points for R-MC to cut the lead down to just six with 12 minutes to play
  • The Yellow Jackets continued to chip away at the lead and found themselves down just two, 52-50, with 5:16 on the clock, but the Tigers clamped down on defense and made a living on the foul line. R-MC would not score again until there was 46 seconds left
  • Meanwhile, H-SC made four free throws, Josh Katowitz grabbed an offensive rebound, and finished with a reverse layup to put H-SC up eight, 58-50, with 1:08 on the clock
  • Adams drained a three-pointer with 46 seconds to play. From there, Randolph-Macon elected to foul and a combination of missed shots and turnovers by the Yellow Jackets, along with five JaVonte Reddick free throws, sealed the game

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Reddick led all scorers with 19 points. He made 5-8 field goals, 2-4 three pointers, and 7-9 free throws
  • Guilherme Guimaraes notched 11 points and four rebounds
  • Jake Duncan scored nine with four boards
  • Katowitz contributed six points and a game-high nine rebounds
  • Logan Samuels tallied six points, five boards, three assists, and two steals

FOR THE FOES

  • Grayson Midulla led Randolph-Macon with 17 points and five rebounds
  • Adams tacked on 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC limited R-MC to a 34.6% shooting performance and just 8-27 beyond the arc
  • Hampden-Sydney shot 44.7% from the floor, 3-11 from three, and 18-26 on the foul line
  • The Tigers outrebound the Yellow Jackets 36-30 , held a 14-9 advantage in second chance points, and outscored them 30-16 in the paint
