Tigers face top-ranked Captains on the road

Hampden-Sydney Plays At No. 1 Christopher Newport On Tuesday At 7 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road at nationally-ranked No. 1 Christopher Newport University in non-conference basketball action on Tuesday night, December 13, at 7 p.m. in Newport News. It's the third of five games away from home this month, and already the eighth contest away from campus this season. H-SC is 6-3 overall, while top-ranked CNU is undefeated at 9-0 overall. It's the second time this season that the Tigers are playing the No. 1 team in the D3hoops.com Top 25, as Randolph-Macon had the ranking when the Garnet & Grey played in Ashland on November 19, falling 61-59 to the defending national champion Yellow Jackets. The CNU game will be available to watch via CNU All-Access.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fourth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 113-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Caleb is 36-31 overall at the College, including 21-19 in ODAC games.

Scouting Hampden-Sydney
H-SC has won four-straight contests, including its most recent game at ODAC member Lynchburg, 89-72, on Dec. 7. The Tigers have three players averaging in double-figure scoring among six that are scoring at least 7.3 points per game. Junior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) leads the team with his 13.2 points and 7.0 rebounds, followed by senior guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) (12.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists), along with junior guard DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) (11.1 points, 21 3FGs). Junior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) adds 9.2 points and 4.0 assists with 12 3FGs. H-SC is shooting 47% (259-554) from the field, including 35% (73-207) on three-point field goals, and 71% (109-154) at the free throw line. The Tigers average 77.8 points, and allow 68.4 points, for a +9.3 scoring margin.

Scouting No. 1 Christopher Newport
The Captains are coached by 12th-year head coach John Krikorian. CNU has opened the season with nine consecutive wins, including its most recent game against Marymount, 81-66, on Dec. 11. The Captains have two players averaging in double figures among nine that are scoring at least 5.0 points per game. Junior guard Jahn Hines leads the team with his 18.0 points, adding 5.6 rebounds, followed by junior forward Trey Barber (11.0 points, 7.9 rebounds). CNU shoots 48% (281-580) from the field, including 37% (61-165) on three-pointers, and 60% (113-190) at the line; scoring 81.8 points, and yielding 63.1 points, for an impressive +18.7 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC and CNU are playing for the 14th time overall since the 1975-76 season. The Captains lead the series at 8-5, including a 79-74 road win against the Tigers last Dec. 14 at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. H-SC's last win against CNU was at home by a score of 78-71 over 27 years ago on March 2, 1995 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, played in Fleet Gym. The Tigers did win on their last visit to CNU, 77-73, 35 years ago on Dec. 5, 1987.

Double-Double?
Davidson Hubbard has posted four double-doubles this season. He scored 12 points, adding 10 rebounds at Greensboro (NC) on Nov. 8, making 6-8 field goals. Hubbard had game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds versus Alvernia (PA) on Nov. 11 (8-15 FGs, 1-2 3FGs, 4-4 FTs), adding a career-high three blocks. He equaled his career-high with 22 points, adding a season-high 11 rebounds at Mary Washington on Nov. 22. Hubbard had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds at Lynchburg on Dec. 3, equaling his career-high with four assists, as well. Davidson now has seven career double-doubles at H-SC, and has scored in double figures in eight of nine games this season.

Chasing 1,000 Career Points
Ryan Clements is seeking to become the first Tiger to surpass the magical 1,000 career point plateau since 2016 (Mike Murray, 1,178). He entered this season with 767 career points in 58 career games, needing to average approximately nine points per game. Clements' career scoring average through three seasons is 13.2, and he is currently averaging 12.3 points through nine games and currently totals 878 career points. Ryan has scored in double figures in seven of nine games this season, and would become the 44th 1,000-point scorer at H-SC.

2022-23 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior forward Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) and senior guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach), along with Adam Brazil. Turner is serving in the leadership role for his second season, while Harris and Brazil are first-year captains. Chase is the son of Samuel and Demia Turner and is majoring in government with a minor in leadership in the public interest. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English.

Roster Breakdown
H-SC features 21 student-athletes from six different states and the District of Columbia. Leading the way with the most Tigers is North Carolina with six, followed by Virginia (4), Georgia (4) and Tennessee (4), along with Florida (1), Maryland (1) and D.C. (1).

From H-SC To Division I Head Coach (X3)
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 13th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his second season at Utah State and his seventh season as a DI head coach (UMBC) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his fifth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 242-158 at UCI ... Odom was 115-76 overall, including 18-16 at USU and 97-60 over five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 68-60 at Longwood.
