Lexington, VA On Saturday the Hampden-Sydney Rugby Club concluded the Fall 15's season, falling to the University of Richmond Spiders 22-7. In a sixty-minute semifinal match as part of the Cardinal Collegiate Challengers' Division tournament, the Tigers and Spiders competed for a spot in the championship match. Off to a strong offensive start, the Tigers attacked right outside of the Richmond goal line in a long possession but were unable to put points on the board. Richmond then took possession and countered with a long-distance line break along the weak side. The ensuing phases resulted in a quick and sudden score. The conversion failed to give the Spiders a 5-0 lead. On the kickoff H-SC once aqain brought pressure, dominating territory throughout the game. Similar to the start of the game, H-SC was unable to convert near the goal line. Richmond began countering and was able to make a smooth try right before half as a result of a Richmond scrum. the conversion again failed, resulting in a halftime score of 10-0.
Following halftime, Richmond resumed scrumming and was able to have a successful eight-man pick that led to a strong maul. This push allowed them to get a quick dot down on the try. The conversion was good and the score stood at 17-0. H-SC was then able to mount a blistering attack but was once again unable to find the end zone. A back for Richmond was then able to sneak through the defensive line for a try. After a failed conversion the score was now 22-0. Resulting to fundamentals, and with a series of strong breakthroughs, the Tigers were finally able to get over the line with a quick score by
Joe Newcomer. The conversion by
Graeme Ebert was a success, setting the final score at 22-7.Â
The third round match, originally scheduled to be played on Sunday, resulted in a forfeit for H-SC due to low player availability for E&H. Washington and Lee defeated the University of Richmond in the Challenge Division final 10-0 on Sunday afternoon and will travel to Knoxville in two weeks for the Challenge Division National Tournament.Â
This ends the Fall 15's season for the Tigers. The Ruggers will resume in January after the start of classes and begin preparing for a spring season.Â
