Hampden-Sydney Opens 2022-23 Campaign At Greensboro (NC) On Tuesday Night At 7 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --
Hampden-Sydney College will open its 2022-23 Basketball campaign on the road at non-conference opponent Greensboro (NC) College on Tuesday, November 8, at 7 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Tigers completed their 2021-22 season with a final record of 14-11 overall, including 8-8 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), earning the No. 7 seed for the 2022 ODAC Tournament and advancing to the quarterfinals. The 14 wins equal that of 2019-20 (14-13), and are the most for the program since 2015-16 (17). The season-opening contest will be available to watch via The Pride Sports Network.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fourth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 113-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Caleb is 30-28 overall at the College, including 17-19 in ODAC games.

The Series
H-SC leads the all-time series against GC 4-0, including an 86-72 home win past the Pride to open last season on Nov. 5, 2021 in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. Jake Hahn posted a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Alex Elliott also scored 18 points, to lead the Tigers. Josiah Hardy and Adam Brazil finished with 13 points and 11 points, respectively, while Greyson Collins scored a game-high 23 points for GC.

Scouting the Tigers
H-SC returns 14 lettermen from last season, including all five starters, while adding seven newcomers for this year. Returning starters include senior guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA), along with junior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC), junior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA), junior guard/forward Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) and junior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC). In addition, senior forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) and senior guard and second-year team captain Chase Turner (Virginia Beach), junior guard DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA), along with sophomore guard Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC), each played at least eight-plus minutes per game, with Wright earning starts, as well.

Clements (6-3) was a Second Team All-ODAC selection a year ago and started 24 of 25 games while averaging 13.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.8 steals and 25.6 minutes. He shot 47% from the field, including 34% on three-point field goals (24), and 87% at the free throw line. Hubbard (6-5) started 21 of 23 games while averaging 10.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 23.9 minutes. Brazil (5-10) started all 25 games while averaging 9.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 29.9 minutes with a team-best 49 three-pointers. Hardy (6-6) started 22 of 23 games while averaging 8.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 24.0 minutes. Elliott (6-4) started 14 of 25 games while averaging 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 19.8 minutes. Wright (5-10) started 10 of 23 games while averaging 6.7 points and 17.4 minutes with 29 three-pointers. Harris (6-7) started one of 21 games while averaging 3.2 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.2 assists and 8.5 minutes with 16 three-pointers. Turner (6-2) started one of 24 games, averaging 2.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 14.1 minutes. Shryock started one of 24 games, averaging 3.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 11.5 minutes with 14 three-pointers.

Returning Depth & Newcomers
H-SC also returns senior forward Harrison Taylor (Nashville, TN) (6-5), along with junior guards Shawn Hodge (Charlotte, NC) (6-2) and Jerrod Nolan (Washington, DC) (5-8), as well as sophomore guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (6-4) and sophomore forward Rashaun Tomlin (Warner Robins, GA) (6-5). New to the program this year are seven freshmen: guard Ryan Blakey (Accokeek, MD) (5-8), guard/forward Hayes Bainbridge (Nashville, TN) (6-3), guard/forward Kolby Wright (Cookeville, TN) (6-4), guard Davis Cauble (Richmond) (5-11), guard/forward Dawson McAlhany (Greensboro, NC) (6-5), forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (6-7) and guard Drew McAtee (Jacksonville, FL) (5-8).

Coach Kimbrough is aided this year by fourth-year assistant coach Bryson Gibson and first-year assistant coach Carson Long. The Tigers are among those receiving votes (12) in this year's D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25.

Scouting the Pride
GC is coached by fourth-year head coach Jim Cantamessa, and finished last season at 10-15 overall, 5-9 in the USA South Athletic Conference. The Pride return 10 lettermen, including three starters, and were picked to finish fifth in the USA South this year. GC is expected to be led by junior forward Matthew Brown (6-7), who averaged 10.0 points and 6.6 rebounds, along with senior guard Ty HIll (5-10), who averaged 8.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists.

ODAC Preseason Coaches Poll
H-SC was picked fifth in the 2022-23 ODAC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Tigers garnered 103 points for fifth among the 13 schools. Three-time defending ODAC Tournament Champion and defending National Champion Randolph-Macon was picked first with 142 points, including 10 first-place votes. Roanoke was picked second with 127 points and had the other three first-place votes, and was followed in the poll by Guilford (115), Virginia Wesleyan (107), H-SC (103), Washington and Lee (102), Bridgewater (71), Lynchburg (66), ODAC newcomer Averett (59), Randolph (44), Eastern Mennonite (37), Shenandoah (24) and Ferrum (17).

From H-SC To Division I Head Coach
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 13th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his second season at Utah State and his seventh season as a DI head coach (UMBC) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his fifth year at Longwood. Turner is 242-158 at UCI, and a four-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year with five Big West regular season titles in the last eight seasons. Odom is 115-76 overall, including 18-16 at USU and 97-60 over five years at UMBC. He was the 2021 America East Conference Coach of the Year, and UMBC became the first-ever 16-seed to win a first round NCAA Tournament game in 2018 with a 74-54 win against the University of Virginia (top overall seed). Aldrich is 68-60 at Longwood, leading the program to its first Division I Tournament appearance in 2022 when Longwood finished 26-7 overall, including 15-1 in the Big South Conference. He was named the 2022 Big South Coach of the Year.

H-SC will remain on the road to participate in the William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Tigers will play Alvernia (PA) University on Friday, Nov. 11, at 6:30 p.m. and either host Franklin & Marshall or Cairn (PA) University on Saturday, Nov. 12—time to be determined.
