H-SC Rugby defeats William and Mary

Tigers move to 2-2-1 with the victory on the Ellis Rugby Pitch

Hampden-Sydney, VA  H-SC Rugby defeated the William and Mary Rugby Club on Saturday 41-22 to move 2-2-1 on the season. Jordan Payton opened the scoring in the 22nd minute running as a supporter in a massive breakaway created by Graeme Ebert. The kick failed, giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead. After a series of phases that amassed several meters during each attempt, Bruton Peacock pulled himself through multiple bodies to secure a second score. The conversion was no good, giving the Tigers a 10-0 lead. On the final play of the first half, James Gilbert was able to slide past some defenders and score on a quick tap-and-go penalty. The conversion was good, making the halftime score 17-0.

At the start of the second half, William and Mary came out with a very quick score with some forward pressure on the left hand side. The conversion was no good, making the score 17-5. James Gilbert quickly countered with a second try, after a blistering tackle by Bruton Peacock led to a change of possession. A successful conversion upped the lead for the Tigers to 24-5. After the kickoff, H-SC attacked the right side, leading to a hat trick for Club President James Gilbert. After a failed conversion the score now stood at 36-5. After a series of strong forward runs, W&M punched with a score off the to the right. After a failed conversion the score was 36-10. After the kickoff H-SC started pushing again and Team Captain John Gregoire was able to dot the ball down making the score 41-17. The Tigers will play again at home this week on the Johnny Ellis Rugby Pitch in the final regular season match for the Tigers. The Ruggers will face Roanoke at 3:00 pm as part of Hampden-Sydney's Homecoming. The Cardinal Collegiate Rugby Conference tournament will be held on November 4th and 5th in Lexington, Virginia. Game times and field locations have not yet been announced as tournament seeds will not be finalized until after this weekend's play.
