Hampden-Sydney, VA – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team fell to Virginia Wesleyan University, 2-1, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup Wednesday at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Marlins struck first after a cross from sophomore Everett McCloskey, skimmed off the top of the head of a Tigers defender which redirected it past the goalie for the goal. The Tigers equalized in the 39th as the free kick came in and deflected off the foot of freshman Walker Stebbings (Forest) then off the head of a Virginia Wesleyan defender and into the net for an own goal.
Virginia Wesleyan took the lead back as senior Caleb Jackson headed off the pass from sophomore Nate Mitchell off the corner from Ilan Mejia, and their defense held the rest of the way as Hampden-Sydney fell 2-1.
The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, October 23, when they travel to Ferrum College for a matchup with the Panthers. The game is schedule 2 p.m. in Ferrum, VA.
