Five Tigers Score In 5-1 Win Over Eastern Mennonite

Hampden-Sydney, VA – Five different members of the Hampden-Sydney College soccer team scored in its, 5-1, Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Eastern Mennonite University, Saturday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

It took just under 13 minutes of play for the game to see its first goal as Hampden-Sydney freshman Zakky Johnston (Meherrin) dribbled towards the corner and fired in a cross into the middle of the box that found his fellow classmate Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) for a headed finish. 20 minutes later the Tigers struck again as senior Boyce Purdie (Clinton, NC) tapped home a rebound following the shot in front of the goalie by senior Michael Ogenyi (Virginia Beach). H-SC made it one more before the halftime whistle as sophomore Justin Varela (Midlothian) rose up over the defender to meet the cross from junior Jackson Burkhart (Raleigh, NC) and power home the header and give the Tigers a 3-0 at the half.

After assisting on a goal in the first half, Johnston got his name on the score sheet in the second after he was in the right place to tap home a rebound following a blasted shot from outside of the box by Purdie. Junior John Alexander (Wake Forest, NC) made it five unanswered goals by the tigers in the 61st minute, as he took on what seemed to be the entire Eastern Mennonite defense before finishing his run with a calm finish into the far corner. The Royals clawed one back in the 68th minute as freshman Dimas Portillo took the free kick from just outside the box and curled it beautifully into the top right corner.

The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, October 19th, when they play host to Virginia Wesleyan University for Senior Night. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
