Shaw's Late Goal Earns Hampden-Sydney A 1-1 Draw With Shenandoah

Hampden-Sydney, VA Junior Declan Shaw (Durham, NC) scored with 2:20 left on the clock to give the Hampden-Sydney College soccer team a, 1-1, draw against Shenandoah University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

The Hornets struck first in the 33rd minute as a free kick on the edge of the box, flown into the box by sophomore Kyle Welch that found junior Maynor Menendez at the back post who headed it down for the first-time finish off the right foot of junior Matthew Allen for the opening goal.

It took almost 88 minutes but the Tigers were finally able to break the deadlock on an inch perfect shot by Shaw that went across the goal and into the side netting on the far post after relentless pressure. The Tigers though could not score that winner in the final two minutes as they drew with Shenandoah 1-1.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, October 15, a home ODAC game on Friends and Family Weekend against Eastern Mennonite University. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
