H-SC played its first ODAC road game last weekend, taking a
28-27 come-from-behind triumph at Guilford (NC). The Tigers fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter and trailed 20-7 at halftime before rallying in the second half, scoring the decisive touchdown with just 1:53 remaining to secure their victory. W&L also played its first ODAC road game last weekend, taking a 25-24 win at No. 16 Randolph-Macon in Ashland. The closely-played contest was tied 14-14 at halftime, and 17-17 after three quarters, before R-MC took a 24-17 lead early in the fourth quarter ... but the Generals scored on the last play of the game and added a two-point conversion for the victory.

H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 137 victories (137-78), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 88-46 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances

The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against W&L,
39-37-2. The Generals, however, have won six of the last 10 games against the Tigers, including a 43-24 win here at Everett Stadium in 2019. H-SC won seven of the first 10 games between the two schools under Head Coach
Marty Favret, who is 11-9 overall against W&L since 2000. The two programs first met on the gridiron in 1899 with the Generals winning 6-5 in Lexington.
Scouting The Tigers
H-SC is led offensively by senior quarterback and team captain
Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Through four games, Bernard has passed for 1,033 yards (75-113) and six touchdowns with four interceptions.
The running game features the tandem of senior
Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount) and sophomore
Josh Jones (South Hill). Smith missed the opening game, but has rushed for 240 yards on 41 attempts (5.9) with three touchdowns, adding 100 yards receiving on 10 receptions. Jones has rushed for 187 yards on 50 carries (3.7) with three touchdowns, adding 146 yards receiving on 15 catches.
Sophomore wide receiver
Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC), along with fifth-year wide receiver and second-year team captain
Dillon Costello (Haymarket) and fifth-year tight end and team captain
Ed Newman (Farmville), lead the receiving group. Bowling has 345 yards receiving on 21 receptions with two touchdowns, while Costello has 238 yards receiving on 14 catches with one touchdown, and Newman has 72 yards receiving on nine catches. Fifth-year slot receiver
Nick Kallivokas (Purcellville) adds 73 yards on three catches with two touchdowns.

Brendan Weinberg (Apex, NC) leads the Tigers on defense with 43 tackles, including 6.5 for loss. Sophomore safety
Will Pickren (Mt Pleasant, SC) has 40 tackles, including three for loss, and one interception. Sophomore safety
James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) adds 27 tackles, including one for loss, and a forced fumble, while junior safety
Hunter Spence (Colonial Heights) adds 24 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, and one interception.
Junior placekicker
Jack Breedlove (Atlanta, GA) is a perfect 10-10 on PATs, and 3-5 on field goals, including a collegiate-best of 39 yards. Sophomore placekicker
Palmer Smith (Chesapeake) played for an injured Breedlove last week at Guilford (NC) and was a perfect 4-4 on PATs, including the decisive extra point during the 28-27 road win. Sophomore left-footed punter
George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 40.3 yards on 16 punts, including a collegiate-best of 67 yards, with two fair caught and one downed inside the 20.
Sophomore wide receiver
Brice Wilson (Lovingston) has averaged 26.0 yards on six kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 43 yards. Classmate and wide receiver
Iceysis Lewis (Radiant) has averaged 25.4 yards on 11 kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 72 yards.
Scouting The Generals
W&L is expected to be led offensively by running backs Josh Breece, Alex Wertz, and Coby Kirkland, (backup) quarterback Stephen Murrin and tight end Alex Vaught. Breece has rushed for 300 yards on 41 attempts (7.3) with four touchdowns. Wertz has rushed for 259 yards on 23 carries (11.3) with two touchdowns, adding an average of 26.4 yards on five kick returns. Kirkland has rushed for 155 yards on 13 carries (11.9) with four touchdowns. Murrin has rushed for 136 yards on 11 carries (12.4) with four touchdowns, and has passed for 29 yards (3-6) with no interceptions. He replaced an injured Jack Pollard during a game-winning 17-play, 99-yard drive at R-MC, and scored the touchdown on the game's final play. Vaught has four receptions for 130 yards and one touchdown.
Linebackers Parker Corley and David Onyejekwe have 22 and 20 tackles, respectively, including three for loss by Corley, while defensive end Robert Poindexter has 2.5 sacks and safety Dean Johnson has two interceptions.
Placekicker Arturo Ramirez is a perfect 21-21 on PATs, and 3-3 on field goals, including a long of 44 yards. Punter Charlie Fleming has averaged 39.0 yards on 14 punts, including a long of 53 yards, with four fair caught and four inside the 20.

Brendan Weinberg ranks first in the ODAC and is tied for seventh in DIII total tackles (43). He is first in the ODAC and is tied for 18th in DIII in tackles for loss (6.5).
Iceysis Lewis ranks first in the ODAC and 13th in Division III combined kick return yardage (279).
Tanner Bernard ranks first in the ODAC and 18th in DIII passing yards (1,033). He is first in the ODAC and 47th in DIII passing yards per game (258.3), second in the ODAC and 25th in DIII completion percentage (.664, 75-113), third in the ODAC and 45th in DIII yards per pass attempt (9.14), third in the ODAC and 45th in DIII passing efficiency (153.6), and tied for third in the ODAC in passing touchdowns (6).

William V. Campbell Trophy®
Kaleb Smith has been named a semifinalist for the
2021 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, as announced on September 29 by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). He is among 176 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of only two from the ODAC and 39 selected from Division III. Kaleb is a Dean's List student majoring in mathematical economics with a 3.37 GPA, and is the son of Brandon and Renee Smith of Rocky Mount.
