ARLINGTON, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team scored a goal in overtime to pick up a non-conference win over host Marymount University on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park in Arlington. The Tigers trailed 2-1 in the second half before scoring the equalizer and then the golden goal winner in the first overtime period. The Tigers improve to 2-2-1 overall while the Saints fall to 3-4.
H-SC has now won the past five matchups against Marymount, dating back to a 1-0 shutout in 2014.
The host Saints struck early in the first half with a goal at the 13:04 mark. However, it did not take long for the Tigers to even the score up. Junior Kade Wheeler (Blacksburg) scored on a penalty kick at 19:56 after the Tigers were fouled inside the box.
Neither team could add another goal in the first half with each team firing three shots to head into halftime tied at 1-1.
Marymount intercepted a pass just 27 seconds in to the second half and chipped in a goal to retake the lead 2-1. At the 71:56 mark, the Saints goalie took too long to pick up the ball in the box and junior Michael Ogenyi (Virginia Beach) was able to knock the ball down and score the equalizer, making it 2-2. The score would remained tied after 90 minutes and the two teams would go to overtime.
The Tigers earned a corner kick at 96:33 which led to the ball being knocked around in front of the goal. Freshman Jack Delaney (Virginia Beach) found the loose ball at 97:16 and scored the sudden victory game-winner for H-SC.
Freshman goalkeeper Connor Kitson (Wake Forest, NC) earned the win in his first collegiate start, making one save in the victory. The Tigers led the Saints in shots (13-12).
H-SC returns to action on Saturday, September 25 when it travels to Shenandoah University in both teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Winchester from Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
