WINCHESTER, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to open up Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action with a 2-1 win over Shenandoah University in Winchester. With the win, H-SC improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the ODAC, while the Hornets fall to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the ODAC.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half with the Hornets taking four shots to the Tigers' one. The two teams were tied 0-0 going into the break.
An H-SC throw-in deep inside Hornet territory deflected off a defender and junior
Boyce Purdie (Clinton, NC) knocked a header past the goalie to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at 64:26. After a nearly identical throw-in was knocked out by Shenandoah, sophomore
Devin Kohout (Alexandria) fired a corner kick into the box, where junior
Michael Ogenyi (Virginia Beach) headed-in the goal to give H-SC a 2-0 lead with 21:52 left in the game.
The Hornets scored a goal with just under 15 minutes left to pull within one, 2-1. However, the Tigers played defensively and kept Shenandoah off the scoreboard the remainder of the game.
Freshman goalie
Connor Kitson (Wake Forest, NC) played all 90 minutes in goal, making three saves.
H-SC will return home for its final non-conference contest of the season on Wednesday, September 29, when it hosts Southern Virginia University. The contest with the Knights gets underway at 7 p.m. on Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
