HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team fell in a designated non-conference game against Roanoke College, 3-0, on Wednesday evening on Hellmuth-Gibson Field. The Tigers move to 1-2-1 overall, while the Maroons improved to 5-1.
Both teams started with nearly identical possessions through the first 30 minutes, before Roanoke fired a shot through from the corner that found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at 30:15. Each team kept the other scoreless for the final 15 minutes of the first half with Roanoke leading 1-0 lead at the break.
A second-half foul by the Tigers just inside the box allowed for Roanoke to score on a penalty kick at 63:35. The Maroons added a third goal at 83:36 that provided for the final margin, 3-0.
Senior goalkeeper
Ian Fitzgerald (Newport News) made four saves, playing all 90 minutes.
H-SC will travel to Arlington on Saturday, September 18, to play at Marymount University in non-conference action. The game will take place at Long Bridge Park with kick-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
