The Tigers knocked the rust off against Christopher Newport this past Saturday in Newport News, in their first match since the fall of 2019. The first half of the game was largely gridlocked. The young Tigers spent much of the half within their opponents' 20 meter line, but a stout CNU Captains defense held them out. In spite of the Tigers' strong defensive stands CNU was able to score twice in the first half. Going into the second half the Captains struck early with a break away try. The next 30 minutes of rugby was a battle of sheer will. The scrum, under the leadership of captain
Mason Khandagle and fellow senior
Ben Olsen, proved a force to be reckoned with. The skill in set pieces and determination in the loose allowed the Tigers to answer back against the Captains' next three tries. The game ended 33- 19 in favor of CNU, but the score alone does not show the tenacity of the young team and freshman standouts
Bruton Peacock, playing 8, and
Graeme Ebert, playing 9. Going into the game, only five of the H-SC ruggers had collegiate match experience. The Tigers next match will be on the road against Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia. The Crusaders are currently ranked #1 in the National Collegiate Rugby small college division.
