Nationally-Ranked Hampden-Sydney Takes Down Ferrum At Home, 18-6

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Nationally-Ranked Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team saw 11 different players score a goal in the Tigers' 18-6 win over visiting Ferrum College on Saturday night. The Tigers scored the first nine goals on the Panthers and never looked back en route to the victory. The win improves the H-SC to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Ferrum falls to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the ODAC.

Keith Phillips/Raleigh, NC pulled double duty against Ferrum on the day. Before helping the lacrosse team in the evening, Phillips was the starting long snapper for the Tigers' football team in their 49-21 win over the Panthers. The starting kicker for Ferrum, Jack Sheehan also did double duty as a dual sport athlete as he is a starter for the Panthers' lacrosse team.

It took 3:37 before the Tigers scored their first goal, a Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, NC goal from Nick Thompson/Midlothian, and from there they never let up. H-SC would score three more goals in just 1:14 minute span to extend the lead to 4-0 by the 10:23 mark of the first quarter. Jared Medwar/Apex, NC started the run when he fired a shot and goal at 11:19 from Jack Hayden/Apex, NC. Jack Limon/Newberry, FL scored unassisted just 11 seconds later at 11:12 while Reilly French/Frederick, MD took a pass from Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, NC at 10:23.

Presley Miller/Annapolis, MD found a streaking Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA at 7:32 to push the lead to 5-0. Thompson score his first goal of the night at 2:17. The Tigers led 6-0 after the opening 15 minutes.

Thompson went right back to scoring to open the second quarter when he took a pass from Ray O'Brien/Scituate, MA at the 13:45 time stamp. Sean Duffy/Ambler, PA and Medwar scored back to back goals just 15 seconds apart at 11:18 and 11:03, respectively. Medwar's goal was assisted by Hayden. Ferrum got on the board with 7:33 left with a goal by Michael Paolicelli. Andrew Shanley/Leesburg was called for a penalty on the goal, but the Tigers were able to win the next faceoff and neutralize the man advantage. Within 15 seconds of his penalty ending, Shanley ran back into the game, caught the ball and made a move on the Ferrum defender and scored his first goal of the night to extend the Tigers' lead back to nine goals at 6:16. With just 38 seconds left in the first half, Marshall Flagg/Williamsburg took a pass from Ray O'Brien to extend the Tigers' lead to 11-1 at halftime.

After Ferrum opened the second half with a goal, H-SC responded with three more. Flagg scored his second of the game at 11:02 off an assist by Patrick Saunders/Alexandria. Shanley scored his second goal of the contest at 8:51 before scoring his third with 4:00 left in the quarter off an assist from Talmadge Hope/Richmond. The Panthers scored with 41 seconds left in the period, but after Michael Thornton/Farmville won the next faceoff, Michael Leone/Vienna found the back of the cage off another Hope assist with just six seconds left in the period, giving the Tigers the 15-3 lead after three quarters.

The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter with H-SC picking up goals at 10:55 (Flagg, assisted by Leone), 5:34 (Nick Scheer/Lakeville, MN, assisted by Luke Helfgott/Arlington), and :03 (Scheer, assist by Harry D'Agostino/Massillon, OH) to give the Tigers the 18-6 win.

Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, PA went a perfect 13-13 on face offs, along with 11 ground balls. Thompson went 5-7 on face offs with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Thornton went 3-6 on face offs with a pair of ground balls. 20 different Tigers had at least one ground ball while Thompson led the team in caused turnovers with three. 11 H-SC players recorded a caused turnover.

Will Perry/Roanoke played the first half for the Tigers, making four saves with four ground balls. William Schlager/Washington, DC opened the second half for the Tigers making a pair of saves. Peter Smith/Warrenton went to start the final period for Hampden-Sydney before Holt Blythe/Virginia Beach played the final 5:34 of the game but made four saves on four straight shots by the Panthers in less than 45 seconds.

The Tigers led Ferrum in shots (63-34), ground balls (48-28), and faceoff wins (21-5).

H-SC will make its season debut from Lewis C. Everett Stadium on Saturday, April 10 when they host rival Randolph-Macon. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
