HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Nationally-Ranked Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team played its first game of the spring in Lewis C. Everett Stadium and made the most of it, dispatching rival Randolph-Macon, 22-13. The win improved the #13/15 Tigers to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The Yellow Jackets fell to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the ODAC.
Randolph-Macon scored first less than four minutes into the game, but H-SC responded when senior Jared Medwar/Apex, NC scored unassisted at 7:01 to tie the game at 1-1. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead, for what would be the last time, less than a minute later to have a 2-1 lead at 6:14 left in the first. Medwar scored his second goal of the game at 4:52 off a pass from classmate Jack Hayden/Apex, NC. Just 19 seconds later Medwar continued his strong start with another unassisted goal to give the Tigers their first lead at 3-2. This started a stretch of nine-unanswered goals continuing into the second quarter. It was freshman Ray O'Brien/Scituate, MA that closed out the scoring in the first, unassisted.
Sophomore Jack Limon/Newberry, FL used his long stick to start off the second quarter with a goal just 14 seconds in off a pass from senior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, PA. Medwar would score three of the next four goals with a single goal by junior Sean Duffy/Ambler, PA sandwiched in the middle at 13:36. Randolph-Macon thought they would have scored the final two goals of the half, but after its goal at 1:47, senior Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, NC scored a man-down goal with 1:05 left in the period off a pass from Medwar. The Tigers led 11-4 at the break.
It was the Yellow Jackets who scored first in the second half with a single goal before Limon answered right back at 12:56 on a pass from senior Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, NC to extend the Tigers' lead once again to seven at 12-5. Randolph-Macon would go on a five goal run to pull within two, but a trio of H-SC goals by sophomore Nick Morgan/Issaquah, WA (00:52), Hayden (00:26), and junior Grayson Ackaway/Virginia Beach (14:56 -4th). After two goals by the visitors, senior Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA put the Tigers back ahead by three at 16-13 with 11:24 left in the game. After the Yellow Jackets scored a single goal, H-SC went on to score the final six goals of the game. Ray O'Brien started with a goal at 7:26 off a pass from Doetzer. The final five goals were all unassisted with Duffy, Medwar, Brummett, Ray O'Brien, and sophomore Kevin Marshall/Mt. Pleasant, SC all finding the back of the cage.
Junior Will Perry/Roanoke played the first 54:20 of the game, making 10 saves and earning the win. Brummett finished the game going 28 for 32 on face offs while collecting 21 ground balls. Both senior Canevin Wallace/Annapolis, MD and Ackaway each had three caused turnovers in the game. In addition to his goal, Doetzer had a game and team-high five assists.
The Tigers travel to Roanoke College on Saturday, April 17 when they take on the Maroons at Donald J. Kerr Stadium. First face off is scheduled for 3:30 pm in Salem.
