Nationally-Ranked Hampden-Sydney Clips Seahawks, 18-7, On The Road

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – Arriving to the field with under 30 minutes until game time, the Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team started slow in their game against St. Mary's (MD). The two teams were tied up at 3-3 after the first 15 minutes, however the Tigers were able to pull away with a 13-1 scoring run over the next two quarters en route to a 18-7 non-conference win over the Seahawks.

 Just over two minutes into the game, Nick Morgan/Issaquah, WA scored unassisted to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Seahawks responded with their own goal just 27 seconds later knotting the score up at 1-1. A pair of goals by Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, NC and Ray O'Brien/Scituate, MA gave the edge back to H-SC at 3-1. The hosts responded once again with their own two goals including one with 23 seconds left in the first quarter, tying the score once again, this time at 3-3.

Three different Tigers scored a total of four goals, all unassisted, to start the second quarter. Reilly French/Frederick, MD started things off at 14:38, just 22 seconds into the period. Sean Duffy/Ambler, PA was next at 12:55 before Presley Miller/Annapolis, MD found the back of the cage at 11:37. French would then score his second of the game at 8:19 before a single Seahawks goal at 6:40 ended the scoring run by the Tigers. Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, NC scored the final goal of the half, and eventual game-winner, at 5:42 off a pass from Jack Hayden/Apex, NC. This started a string of 10 straight goals for the H-SC, a stretch that spanned from Doetzer's goal until the 9:48 mark of the fourth quarter.

With the scored 8-4 in favor of the Tigers to start the third period, the visitors did not let up, doubling their first half score over the next 15 minutes, while the defense was able to stifle St. Mary's. French scored his third goal to start off the second half and was followed up by goals from Grayson Ackaway/Virginia Beach and Henry Hitt/Annapolis, MD. Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA and Hayden would go back and forth over the next four goals with two a piece to extend H-SC's lead to 15-4. Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, NC closed out the scoring in the third for the Tigers at 3:20 to cap the eight goal, third quarter.

Patrick Saunders/Alexandria scored his second collegiate goal at 11:34 of the fourth quarter, ending the 10 goal run and giving the Tigers the 17-4 lead. The Tigers took a timeout with 5:53 left in the game and it paid off as just 20 seconds later, Talmadge Hope/Richmond scored the final Tiger goal of the game at 5:23. The Seahawks score three goals in the final quarter for the final margin of 18-7.

Will Perry/Roanoke played nearly all 60 minutes for the Tigers to earn the win. Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, PA went 13 for 18 on the faceoff while scooping up 11 ground balls. Nick Thompson/Midlothian went 6-8 on face offs while adding six ground balls for Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers finished the game with 19 caused turnovers, led by Miller's three. Jake O'Brien and Weston Dunkel/Atlanta, GA each added two.

H-SC returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday, April 3 when they host Ferrum College. The game against the Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
