Hampden-Sydney Plays At Shenandoah On Friday Night At 7 p.m.

It's the first-ever Friday Night Lights game for the Tigers under 21st-year head coach Marty Favret.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road for the first time this spring at Shenandoah University for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football game on Friday night, March 5, at 7 p.m. in Winchester. The Tigers have a record of 1-0 overall, 1-0 in the ODAC, while the Hornets are 0-1 overall, 0-0 in the ODAC. It's the first-ever Friday Night game for the H-SC program under the direction of 21st-year head coach Marty Favret. The contest will be available to watch and follow via Shenandoah Athletics—all links are available below as well as on both schools' athletics websites.

Head Coach Marty Favret
H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 132 victories (132-75), including 14 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 84-45 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances. The Tigers return 44 lettermen among the 103-man roster, including 18 starters with significant career playing time, while the roster includes 47 newcomers to the program, as well.

Week 1 | H-SC 21 – SVU 0 (02/27/21, at H-SC)
Freshman running back Melik Frost/Bluffton, SC rushed for two touchdowns in his collegiate debut, and the Tigers' defense had three interceptions and a fumble recovery, to lead H-SC to 21-0 ODAC home shutout victory past Southern Virginia on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Senior running back Cole Becker/Spring Lake, NC added a touchdown on the ground, as well, while junior linebacker Peyton Carneal/Hayes, junior defensive back Noah Dowdy/Powhatan and sophomore safety Will Shulleeta/Henrico each had interceptions—senior defensive lineman Tyler Lohman/Centreville added the fumble recovery. The Tigers led 7-0 at halftime against the visiting Knights, before adding scores in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, in the opening game for 2021 and the first action on the gridiron for the hosts in 469 days.

The Tigers - Offensively
H-SC totaled 342 yards of total offense against SVU, including 157 yards rushing and 185 yards passing. Melik Frost finished with a game-high 53 yards rushing on 15 carries and two touchdowns, adding one reception for six yards, while Cole Becker added 30 yards rushing on 10 attempts and one touchdown. Junior quarterback Tanner Bernard/Lynchburg, a transfer from Division II UVA Wise, passed for a game-high 185 yards (23-33) with one interception, adding 31 yards on the ground. Junior all-purpose back Kaleb Smith/Rocky Mount had a game-high 82 yards receiving on 10 catches, adding 22 yards rushing on four carries, while senior captain and wide receiver Dillon Costello/South Riding had four receptions for 38 yards, freshman wide receiver Braeden Bowling/Cary, NC had one catch for 38 yards and senior wide receiver Blake Page/Richmond added two receptions for 20 yards. Sophomore placekicker Jack Breedlove/Atlanta, GA, a transfer from Rhodes (TN) College, added three PATs, but did miss a 30-yard field goal attempt, while freshman punter George Langhammer/Roanoke only punted one time for 31 yards.

The Tigers - Defensively
H-SC forced four turnovers and limited SVU to only 152 yards of total offense, including just 64 yards rushing and 88 yards through the air. Tyler Lohman and freshman defensive back Will Pickren/Mt Pleasant, SC led the Tigers with six tackles each, including one for loss and a fumble recovery by Lohman. Senior captain and defensive back Riggs Jordan/Spencer, senior linebacker Brendan Weinberg/Apex, NC and junior cornerback Jordan Fields/Chapel Hill each had five tackles—Jordan with one for loss and one sack and Weinberg with one for loss and a half-sack. Senior captain and defensive lineman Phil Pullen/Manassas, junior linebacker Stephen Cash/Kill Devil Hills, NC, junior defensive back Dallas Robinson/Lorton, Shulleeta and freshman defensive lineman Kevin Gholson/Montpelier each contributed four tackles—Pullen with one for loss, along with Cash (half-sack), and Gholson each with 0.5 for loss—while Shulleeta returned his first collegiate interception 24 yards.

The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against SU, 5-3; however, the Hornets have won two-straight, including a 21-17 road win against the Tigers on October 19, 2019. H-SC won five of the first six games played between the two schools, and has averaged 37 points per game against SU. The Tigers and the Hornets first met on the gridiron in 2012—a 42-21 road win for H-SC, who is 3-1 in games played in Winchester.

Last Game vs. Shenandoah (10/19/19, at H-SC)
Major Morgan caught a career-high 14 passes for 165 yards, but it wasn't enough as H-SC dropped a hard-fought 21-17 ODAC decision to SU at Everett Stadium. Austin Murphy came off the bench to pass for a career-high 212 yards (25-43) and two touchdowns for the host Tigers, while Dillon Costello had a career-high 12 receptions for 56 yards and one touchdown. Griffin Davis and Tony Talbert each had a game-high 12 tackles, also a career-high for Talbert, who had 1.5 tackles for loss, and Davis was credited with 0.5 tackles for loss. Brendan Weinberg added nine tackles, Brad Jeffers and Riggs Jordan each had eight tackles, including one for loss by Jordan, and Phil Pullen added five tackles, including a sack, and a forced fumble.

Ben Agostino passed for 210 yards (20-33) and one touchdown, while Ben Rhodenizer added 61 yards passing (4-6) and one touchdown—the game-winner to Casey Stewart with 9:08 remaining (10 yards). Agostino added 32 yards rushing on six carries, and Stewart had 73 yards receiving on four catches and two touchdowns. Daquan Pridget had 11 tackles and broke-up four passes from his spot in the secondary. Randy Oliver added nine tackles, including one for loss, while Tyler Williams and Jordan Rice each finished with eight tackles.

Among the ODAC Leaders (Top Five)
Through one game, Kaleb Smith is first in the ODAC in receptions (10), tied for second in all-purpose yards (104) and is third in receiving yards (82). Melik Frost is tied for first in rushing touchdowns (2) and scoring (12), and is fourth in rushing yards (53). Tyler Lohman is tied for first in fumble recoveries (1). Tanner Bernard is second in completions (23) and completion percentage (69.7), while third in attempts (33) and passing yards (185). Jack Breedlove is tied for first in PAT percentage (100.0) and tied for fifth in kick scoring (3). Cole Becker is tied for third in rushing touchdowns (1). Riggs Jordan is tied for third in sacks (1).

Following a bye week, H-SC will play on the road for the second time this spring—traveling to ODAC member Guilford (NC) College on Friday evening, March 19, at 5 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
