HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse scored twice in a 21 second span late in the fourth quarter to pick up a 14-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Washington and Lee Saturday evening. Senior Jack Hayden/Apex, NC and sophomore Nick Morgan/Issaquah, WA scored at 4:20 and 3:59, respectively, in the final quarter to push the Tigers ahead and the win from Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The win for the Tigers snapped W&L's 24 regular season ODAC win streak that dated back to April 22, 2017, in a 15-14 loss to Roanoke. That season also saw the Tigers win the ODAC Tournament over Lynchburg to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers got on the board quickly to start things off with goals by both senior Jared Medwar/Apex, NC and Hayden at 13:11 and 11:37, respectively, giving the Tigers the 2-0 lead. Junior Sean Duffy/Ambler, PA assisted on Medwar's goal while freshman Ray O'Brien/Scituate, MA assisted on Hayden's. After a goal by the Generals, senior Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA found the back of the cage at 6:12 left in the first while Morgan scored his first of night at 4:39, unassisted.
W&L scored a pair of goals in the final minute of the first quarter and opened the second with another two to take a 5-4 at 13:14 left in the first half. However, it was the last time the Generals had a lead. Senior Reilly French/Frederick, MD took a pass from Medwar at 9:48 in the second to bring the score even at 5-5. It was the last goal for either team in the half as W&L fired three more shots, with junior Will Perry/Roanoke making two saves during that span.
Looking to break the tie, the Tigers scored three times in the first five minutes of the second half thanks to a pair of goals from Jake O'Brien (13:26, assisted by senior Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, NC and 10:01, assisted by Medwar) and Doetzer (11:19, unassisted). With the Tigers having an 8-5 lead, W&L responded to pull within one at 6:25, but another string of three goals for H-SC pushed the lead to four goals at 11-7. Jake O'Brien scored again at 6:19 off a faceoff win for senior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, PA who passed it for the Tigers goal. Hayden found the back of the net in back-to-back goals at 4:19 and 3:10 with assists by Duffy and sophomore Nick Thompson/Midlothian, respectively. The Tigers closed out the third quarter having an 11-8 lead.
The fourth saw W&L score a pair of goals before Medwar scored his second goal of the game to push the Tigers lead back to 12-10 with 10:32 left. The Generals responded with two more goals to knot the score up at 12-12. The Tigers would call timeout at 5:28 and made the most of an extended talk as Hayden scored his fourth of the contest at 4:20. Brummett would win his 14th faceoff of the night before Nick Morgan fired a shot passed the goalie 21 second later.
Perry played all 60 minutes in goal for the Tigers, making 13 saves and picking up eight ground balls. The Tigers forced 13 W&L turnovers while both teams tallied 38 ground balls.
The Generals were led by five players with two goals apiece.
The Tigers return to the field on Wednesday, March 31 when they travel to St. Mary's (MD). The game with the Seahawks gets underway at 6 p.m. at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
