HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team extended its winning streak to three after a 14-8 win over visiting the University of Mary Washington Eagles on Tuesday night from Hellmuth-Gibson Field. Senior captain Jack Hayden/Apex, NC led the way for the Tigers with five goals and a pair of assists.
It did not take Hayden long to score his first of the contest. After senior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, PA won the opening faceoff, he passed straight to Hayden, who fired a shot into the back of the cage for the quick 1-0 lead for the Tigers. The Eagles responded by tying the game up at 1-1 at 13:20 left in the first quarter.
It would be H-SC who answered in kind with three goals in less than a minute. Hayden tallied his second of the evening off a pass from classmate Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, NC at 9:58. Just 17 second later, captain Jared Medwar/Apex, NC scored his first of the contest, unassisted at 9:41. Fellow senior Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA closed out the scoring run with an assist from Hayden at 9:20. After Mary Washington ended the scoring stretch, Jake O'Brien scored his ninth goal of the season off a pass from junior Sean Duffy/Ambler, PA at 7:36.
The two teams remained quiet for the next four minutes before Hayden scored his third and fourth of the quarter at 3:05 and 1:09, respectively. Medwar assisted on the goal at 3:05 while senior Reilly French/Frederick, MD assisted on the 1:09 goal. The Tigers led 7-3 heading into the second period.
Jake O'Brien extended the Tigers' lead at 11:38 of the second quarter off Doetzer's second assist of the game. After the Eagles clear attempt failed, senior Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, NC scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Hayden at 8:31. Mary Washington kept the Tigers' offense in check while scoring a pair of goals, but trailed H-SC 9-5 at the half.
Hayden scored his fifth goal of the game, and 14th of the season, at 12:06 off a pass from Medwar. After Brummett secured the next faceoff, Patnesky found a streaking Jack Limon/Newberry, FL who scored his first collegiate goal, giving the Tigers the 11-5 lead. Duffy would add his seventh and eighth goals of the season at 8:48 in the third and 11:49 of the fourth while junior Grayson Ackaway/Virginia Beach finished the scoring for the Tigers at 11:38. Mary Washington was unable to get closer than six goals as H-SC would go on to claim the 14-8 win.
Junior Will Perry/Roanoke won his third game in as many games this season making 11 saves, six ground balls and two caused turnovers. H-SC led the Eagles in shots (47-32), saves (12-5), ground balls (39-30), and faceoff wins (16-9). Sophomore Nick Morgan/Issaquah, WA helped lead the defensive effort for the home team with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
