LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team ran its undefeated streak to 19 games with a 1-0 shutout win over the University of Lynchburg Sunday evening from Shellenberger Field in Lynchburg. The Tigers improved to 5-0 this season and 5-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The Hornets fell to 4-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the ODAC.
The win marked the first victory over Lynchburg since the 2012 season when the Tigers won 3-0. The stretch included two ties last season including a 4-4 draw in the ODAC Tournament semifinals with Lynchburg advancing on penalty kicks.
The first half was a defensive battle between the Tigers and the Hornets. Neither team was able to find the back of the net with both teams taking one shot on goal.
The second half got off quickly for the Tigers when freshman Declan Shaw/Raleigh, NC drove past three Lynchburg defenders after a short pass from classmate John Alexander/Wake Forest, NC and pulled the goalie out enough to fire a cross into the opposite corner of the goal just 1:46 into the second half. It was the only shot for H-SC in the second half while the Hornets were able to fire off eight more with three on goal.
Senior Gray Sutter/Clinton, NC made saves on all four shots on goal for Lynchburg in the contest. Despite the Hornets leading in total shots (15-4) and corner kicks (4-2), it was the Tigers who made the most of their offensive chances.
H-SC will stay on the road on Thursday, March 25, when they play the postponed game at Ferrum from March 18. The game with the Panthers gets underway at 6 p.m. from Penn-Roediger Field in Ferrum.
